The most recent is

"In the Time of the Butterflies" with Salma Hayek. Following description was cut&pasted from her website:

Salma Hayek, Edward James Olmos, Marc Anthony, Lumi Carvazos, Mia Maestro

IN THE TIME OF BUTTERFLIES is a good movie-of-the-week look at the underground freedom fighting in 1950?s and 60?s Dominican Republic. Salma Hayek (who also co-produced)is the head of a family of women driven to desperate measures to find freedom as well as revenge for their father?s death. Based upon the true story of the Mirabal sisters, BUTTERFLIES re-enacts the lives that helped create an underground rebel network against President Rafael Trujillo?s dictatorship. In 1960, they were murdered as an example to the public.

Reports are that the movie wasn't that great, but each to his or her own. I've not yet seen it.

Don't know if it counts.. you decide. But.. a few Italian splatter films have been shot in the DR.. Lucio Fulci's Zombie (played in the DR as ZOMBI 2, as Dawn of the Dead was called Zombi..) and Joe D'Amato helmed PORNO HOLOCAUST, about a *hugely* endowed and deformed native who rapes women. The action takes place in remote places in the Dominican Republic

True JOHNNY, but the film was based on the DR. The story of the Mirabal sisters. Sorta makes you wonder why it was not filmed in the DR, doesn't it?

Of course, rafael has a most valid point concerning Salma Hayek! :)

Havana, starting Robert Redford, was filmed almost entirely in the Dominican Republic. You can see the National Palace and the Palace of the Police among other sights.

I recommend "La Herencia del Tirano: Balaguer y el Poder", "Balaguer: The Legacy of the Tyrant" in Spanish with English subtitles. My rating: excellent.

It's a 90 min. documentary video written and directed by Rene Fortunato which narrates and shows actual historical footage of the dramatic events that took place in the DR immmediately following dictator Rafael L. Trujillo's death.

These events include the efforts made by Trujillo's son Ramfis and Joaquin Balaguer to remain in power; the development and beginnings in the DR of the PRD activities; the 1962 democratic elections, where professor Juan Bosch was elected president; the riots of the 'Union Civica' and the 'Movimiento 14 de junio' among other things.

It follows the documentary titled "El Poder del Jefe", but I believe that one doesn't have English subtitles. That one, though is a 3 volume set and is a must-see.

You can call the distributor Videocine Paulau in Sto. Dgo. at 809-562-8833 or fax 809-547-7494 and they'll tell you where you can find a copy.

Hope this helps and hope you enjoy it/them.
