Hello Dear Sirs & Madams

Please let me introduce myself.
My name is Darrin Ward and I live in Ireland (Europe). I am wanting to relocate to the Dominican Republic, however I need some advise from experienced people such as yourselves.

I am 20 years of age, speak fluent english (given that I am a native speaker), I speak very good spanish (I have lived in Madrid, Spain) & Tampa, Florida (Spanish is used there).

I have taught English as a foreign language in Madrid and would be interested in doing the same in the Dominican Republic.

I have heard from some sources that to work in the Dominican Republic, I must only get a contract from a local company, and there is not such difficulty as in the USA, can anyone firmly confirm this? Is this also true for Europeans?

Also, might someone suggest the best resource / website for searching for a job in Santo Domingo before I arrive, if this resource / website is in spanish, that would not be a problem.

Although teaching english is something I have done, I also am a very good website designer, I have studied electronics & computers in college, managed radio station installations etc.., so I'm more than just a pretty face - On that note, I have also done some modelling, would this be a thriving industry in the Dominican Republic?

Let me thank those in advance who can provide any help & clarification.

Regadrs...
Darrin Ward

You should start by clicking the "search" button at top of this page, then doing a search for such topics as Teaching English in the Dominican Republic and Finding Work in the Dominican Republic.

This subject has come up before, so you will find helpful information already available.

Darvin....I unfortunately don't have time to respond right this minute...but If you post what you just stated under the "living" directories of the forums, you might just get more replies...just like they bombarded me. : O)

NO, NO, NO! ShoortyLov and Darrin. Do not post in more than one section. The regulars who might be able to help you monitor all the sections. There is no group for one section and a different group for another.

First, look through the archives. There is a lot of information there. Check for information on teaching English, and on anything else you are interested in.

Because of your age and lack of a college degree and teaching certificate, you will only be able to get work in the "commercial schools" that offer English for a fee. Pay in these schools is low, as you will see when you search the archives.

Finding work that pays a living wage in the Dominican Republic isn't easy. You need to come with sufficient cash to keep you going for long enough to find a job or decide to go elsewhere.

Your fluency in Spanish will be a plus. Your lack of education and teaching certificate will be a minus for teaching jobs.

The possibility of work in electronics or with computers, etc., are better possibilities.

Your most likely source of work will be in Santo Domingo. Come here with money to live on and start looking. Don't expect it to be easy.

If you find a job, you can start working. If you are going to stay, you will need to get your residency.
