Thinking about staying at the Naco Hotel and Casino 10 minutes outside of Santo Domingo the week leading up to Millenium Weekend 99/00. Has anyone stayed at this hotel...Any reviews good or bad...Are there any other budget hotels in the area that you would recommend either close to downtown or the Malecon where all of the New Year's celebrations will take place. Thanks for your input

Actually the Naco Hotel is in the "middle" of Santo Domingo's business district, though about 20 minutes from the ocean. It's seen better days.

Try the Hotel Italia, just a block or two north of the Malecon, about a mile west of Maximo Gomez.

I was sorry to read Jim's response of "it's seen better days" regarding your inquiry on Hotel Naco. I spent a week at Hotel Naco three years ago, and (at the time) it was a very decent (nice enough, but not luxurious), clean, quiet place. The employees there were all very nice too. Excellent "cafe con leche" and ice cold Presidentes at the cafe/bar to boot!

It is very conveniently located right in the city. As a "budget" hotel, I'd recommend it in a second. Of course, I haven't been there in three years, and I realize things change.

Good luck. I hope you have a wonderful time regardless of where you end up staying.
