Cheché Abreu passed away on 17 November 2020 of a heart attack caused by Covid-19. He was hospitalized at the Clínica Rodríguez Santos in Santo Domingo. He was 81 years old.
He was best known for his classic merengues and his music creation, “mangué.” Abreu worked himself up the Navy ranks where he also studied music and played with the Navy Orchestra. He later formed the group Cheché Abreu y sus Colosos. He is also recognized for his long years of social works carried out for his hometown of Manoguayabo, in northern Santo Domingo. In 1995 and 2005 he suffered strokes from which he had recovered.
