I was gifted an iPhone that could not be unlocked in the DR. The solution was to use a Turbo Sim to unlock it.
It simply stacks together with the CLARO, or ALTICE, etc. sim card.

Cheaper and easier than paying for a formal unlocking method or in my case when it was not possible at all.
My TurboSim was installed in Cabarete, but I am sure many if not all phone shops have it. The Altice agent recommended
where we go, and we already knew the person who unlocked it very well.

Just like my free iPhone7 was unlockable. Until that little TurboSim did its magic. Simple and cheap solution to that problem.

Its a cheap Alcatel Android phone that I use when I go to the states.
Only have to pay as you go per month, no contract.

Why you need to "unlock" it? To my knowledge, now adays it's very unlikely that an android phone is carrier locked, and in that case only high end phones, not cheap alcatel. If it's a phone with cdma instead of a GSM than that's another deal, as it's not a unlocking question, but rather a question about phone radio system difference, and that is not possible to use outside the US.

I was wondering the same thing. I brought in a relatively inexpensive Samsung that was carrier locked(T-Mobile). It was advertised unlocked. Two places both said it was impossible to unlock it until the contract on it expired. Would a TurboSim work? How much do they cost?

I paid $1,500 RD to Jonathan Diaz in Cabarete.

I did not say I refused to use one. I used my wife's when I had to previously. I said I refused to buy one.

I was gifted an iPhone 7. I use it mainly to call people who no longer answer phones.

Also, Vonage could no longer call DR cell phones, so I had another motivation to get WhatsApp since the previous the version of WhatsApp on a tablet I had stopped working.

Turns out a local Altice plan is cheaper than the now useless Vonage plan. Without using the TurboSim solution I still would not have a cell phone.

You could have just got a Wi-Fi enabled smartphone and used WhatsApp for free, I can not believe you spend RD1500, that is nuts.
I would have just given you my Galaxy-S20 ULTRA for free, I just got the S21, great camera!

I realize that I could have just gotten a Wi-Fi enabled smart phone to do many things.
I was using it before for just that. But then Vonage failed to be able to call DR cell phones, I cancelled Vonage and pay less
now for two cell phones that are on very sufficient plans for our needs.

Does not WhatsApp need an actual phone number to set up and work?
I was able to spoof WhatsApp previously using a GoogleVoice number and run it on a tablet, but no longer.

Not all the places I need to call in the DR are on WhatsApp. Not all phones here have WiFi plans when people are out and about to be able to use WhatsApp to call them.

1,500 RD to get a new and free to me iPhone7 totally functional in the DR is too much?

Interesting and good to know that the TurboSim is not an option for anything but iPhones, which I would have expected would be the hardest to "crack".

I mentioned I was given the new iPhone7 for free. Why get another phone? I will always accept free things, even a Galaxy-S20 ULTRA. Thanks...

I have no idea if this really works.
