A new National Police rollout was officially launched on Monday, 2 June 2025 with 1,100 agents wearing cameras and with specialized community interaction training. The pilot program across 137 urban areas aims to transform and modernize public safety services across the Dominican Republic, with an initial focus on the National District and Santo Domingo.

The first areas slated for reinforced surveillance are Naco, the Colonial City, and Los Mina in Santo Domingo East. The initiative will later expand to Santiago, the country’s second largest city.

The program’s launch, led by President Luis Abinader, showcased a significant upgrade in police operations. New uniforms, body cameras, non-lethal weapons, and multi-purpose belts were unveiled, signaling a “before and after” moment for the institution.

Body cameras are valuable, if they are turned on and maintained in good working order... ingredients infrequently found in the DR. Waiting for the first report of an event where all the body cameras present were not working. Place your bets for date, time, and where.

Police patrols with the new bells and whistles will not make improvements unless the deep-seated do-nothing attitude culture of police changes to a proactive approach. We are waiting...

I wonder how many of these police are graduates of the "New and improved training" program?

Johne, by the examples the police have set here there will be no applause. The police get very little respect from me. I will always be nice and smile but I feel they're only one small step up from the criminals they allegedly control.
Sorry that the genesis of the police department certainly appears to be as you say. Sin embargo, that's the story for positions of authority all across the world...not only in the RD. Once we lose hope for a better future we become another "Haiti", lawless and depraved.
Remember, this is not our country. We are only visitors standing in THEIR house. We by necessity need to be a bit more humble. If not...it don't work.
Let's give the new police force some time and see how it goes.

Hopefully they are conducting random drugs test on these guys and all of them pass. Will help to eliminate any bad apples before they start causing problems in those same areas they're being paid to protect and serve.

An effort. All good. Naysayers should be happy and applause.
I'm still not convinced at this point. Perhaps it's gonna require a little more time then we initially thought?
