My thought from what the sign says is that the church is being replaced

I would not be surprised if the land the work is being done on belongs to the church.

The problem with this thread is that nobody knows for sure what they are talking about and pretty soon speculation starts being considered fact.

Was there actually a Catholic church there before? The only big Catholic church in the area that I knew about is in the Callejon. That's not to say they couldn't have bought that land. They certainly have the money.

St Anthony de Padua has only been in Charamicos since 1957!
