Hello,
My husband and I have travelled quite a bit and now are planning our first trip to the Dominican Republic. I have read through the forums and there is so much information out there!

We are tentatively planning 8 days in DR. The first 4 we have earmarked for Santo Domingo (being history buffs) and the the remaining 4 days in Puerto Plata (for the beach!). We are looking at staying at the Sofitel hotel in Colonial Quarter in Santo Domingo and Casa Colonial in Puerto Plata. Question, should I shorten my time at either places to add another location? Is there something I absolutely MUST see in between locations. I have heard wonderful things about the beaches at Punta Cana. Another thing I just read about was a moonlit horse ride including dinner at the Samana Penninsula (anyone know if it is worth it?). Also, my husband is a huge cigar buff, any "must see" recommendations?

Thanks for any advice you may have and for letting me ask the "dumb" questions.

your hotel is SDQ should be fine...........buy cigars in the large supermarkets,,,,,,,,,,good selection and best prices.......do not buy in any hotel gift shop, high prices and old cigars. do not buy in the airport on the way out of country, same. if someone offers cuban cigars, pass.......in cuba there are fake monte christos. why would they be so easy to get here?.......and dominican cigars are by far better anyway........if you are coming from the frozen north any beach is grand.........the beach in POP should be fine but it may not rock your world if you are from hawaii........it will not be like cape cod.........best beach is a relative term...........i have some experience in the advertising biz. and have seen auto commercials and photo shoots done on the crappiest beaches in florida, but, when they make it to a page in TIME mag or your tv it looks like paradise.......is the beach in POP better than the beach in punta cana?...........depends on who i'm with.............which part of the beach?,,,,,,,,,beverly hills and watts are both in california. is california beautiful?,,,,,,,,,,,,,it will not snow or be cold when you are here,,,,enjoy........

Recommendations for PP and SDQ

You have chosen two charming hotels. I would stick with Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata, so you have time to relax. Also, there is lots to see and do. My recommendations...

If you are a history buff, may I recommend you tour the Colonial City with my good friend-tour guide Samuel who is studying for a doctorate in Dominican history. Samuel can also help customize a route for other parts of Santo Domingo, and then you can hire a taxi to take you to those other places. Email me at Dolores@dr1.com for his contact details. In Santo Domingo, I always recommend a visit to our Botanical Gardens. Plan on taking three hours for that. Check our Calendar at http://www.dr1.com/calendar for an evening event that may fit your schedule. In the Colonial City, drop by Meson di Bari for Dominican food ? try the stewed crab.

In the Colonial City, drop by the gift shop besides Hard Rock Caf? (in front of the Colonial City to check out the handicrafts. The Mercado Modelo is within walking distance, so you can check out the gift shop to have an idea of prices and then visit the market, where you are expected to bargain. Also for shopping, in the Colonial City is Jenny Polanco and Bibi Leon?s boutique on Padre Billini street near Isabel la Catolica. You might want to get an idea of good Dominican art ? Museo Bellapart and/or Museum of Modern Art. You should also check out art galleries ? Mildred Canahuate at Arawak Art Gallery, in modern Santo Domingo, is very knowledgeable. Try to go when she is there; she is a walking encyclopedia of Dominican art. Of course if you are a history buff, you must visit the Columbus Lighthouse.

In Puerto Plata, ask for chef Rafael Vasquez at the Casa Colonial, and ask him to prepare you something truly Dominican for dinner. Tell him that Dolores of DR1 is sending you. He is a great chef. Be sure to make a day trip to Sosua Beach, and then visit Motif art gallery, of Lisa Kirkman. She has a very good selection of young Puerto Plata artists ? lots of great paintings. Next spend an entire day in Cabarete, watching the spectacle of the kite sailors and windsurfers. Shop for beach wear at Carib Bic Wind Center. Nights are great in Cabarete, and taxis are available to take you back to Playa Dorada.
Visit the Victorian Houses of Puerto Plata, and the small fort, one of the first contraband points in the New World. And take time to take the skylift (go first thing in the morning to get the best views) up to the Botanical Gardens of Puerto Plata. They are special because everything up there grows so dinosaur-like. Ocean World has a good Latin music show in the evening ? they have a package of pick up, dinner and casino time plus show. The spa at Casa Colonial is pricey, but I had one super experience of a couple?s massage. Go for it.

Depending on the time you come, please take time to stroll the Malecon and note the changing colors of the almond and sea grape trees ? especially in February and March.
There is a small beach next to the apartment building No. 5, known as Long Beachito, that is nice for bathing. Few people seem to have yet discovered it. Also, note the painting of the whales on the oil tanks also on the Malecon, and check out the mural built by the students of the Antera Mota public school. When you take a taxi to Puerto Plata town, ask the driver to point these out to you.

Also, Playa Dorada, where your hotel is located, is full of small birds so bring your camera and catch them in the early morning and late afternoon. For dining, you can check out Al Fresco in Playa Dorada Plaza, and there is a patio of a well known musician in downtown that has good local food, too. Will ask for the name.

Re cigars, my recommendation would be for a stopover at the Centro Leon in Santiago on the way to Puerto Plata. It is probably the best museum right now in the DR and they have a separate area for cigars. Their own cigars are very good. On the way to Puerto Plata from Santo Domingo, you will see tobacco plantations. If you take the Metro Bus to Santiago, you can make a stopover in Santiago and take a taxi from the station to Centro Leon, and then catch the next bus to Puerto Plata, and from there a taxi to Casa Colonial.

Enjoy!

Do not leave out Damajagua

Oops... Forgot one MUST... the Damajagua Falls. Go early in the morning, be there at 8:30 am and ask for Joel or Robert. Go up the 27 falls (about RD$400), and then jump your way down. It is a world class, memorable natural monument. You jump down water falls and through toboggan and channels. You probably could rent a car for the day to get there, because it is pricey by taxi, although only about 30 minutes from your hotel. It will take up all the morning, but is 200% worth it. You need shoes and clothes that can get wet and dry.

Hi, I'm new to all of this and simply wanted more insight on Punta Cana. I visited once and fell on love with the City. Anyone familiar with cost of living, jobs (easy/hard to get) & most importantly security. Your feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

Some good ideas here. Near to the "Museum of Modern Art" in Gazcue is the Museum of Dominican Man - ethnological collection and worth a visit.

For my second location I would go to the Samana Peninsular - Las Galeras a small village with several small hotels - beautiful beaches and very quiet, rather than Puerto Plata or Punta Cana

8 days

We are tentatively planning 8 days in DR. The first 4 we have earmarked for Santo Domingo (being history buffs) and the the remaining 4 days in Puerto Plata (for the beach!).

Kelli - you might want to take in account the travel time between the
North Coast and Santo Domingo - if you are traveling by bus (CaribeTour
or Metro - & bus is the best way) you will be spending the best part of the day getting from one place to the other. The trip is about 4 1/2 hours or
a little more on the bus - then figure in the time to get from your hotel
in the Col. Zone to the bus station - waiting time - and then the time
from the bus station to your hotel in PP - checking out & in etc. -
you'll use up a big part of the day for the trip.

If you can add a couple extra days I'd bet you would have a much more relaxed trip -
plently of time to take in the sights and some down time just
to enjoy being in the DR (and each other :cheeky:)

Have a great time !!! And remember - - - -

You may have better luck if you post this on the East Coast thread. :rambo:

I have not made reservations yet. I was attracted to them because of central location. I was attracted to the Nicolas because of the historic building, but would be interested in your thoughts between the two.

Hotels

If you haven't made your hotel reservations yet you might want to check
out Hotel Atarazana in the Col. Zone. It is the No. 1 rated hotel in
Santo Dom. by tripadvisor (.com)
Restored historic building - more like a B&B than a hotel.

Do a search on this site for lots more info about it.

Have fun !! :knockedou

I happen to see something about cigars.
For quality cigars, I think the cigar shop inthe Hotel Jaragua can be trusted.
They have a good selection of local and Cuban cigars.

The cigar shops at the Supermercado Nacional are well stocked with Dominican cigars--all top of the line.

There might be a FUMO shop in Santo Domingo, I just don't know. They too are a good place.

Do have fun.

I can't give you thoughts on the other Sofitel hotel, but as I just stated in another thread, I have stayed at the Nicolas de Ovando.

It is a wonderful, charming hotel, and like you stated, holds historic value. Meals were exceptional, nice lounge to sit back and enjoy a cocktail after a day of sightseeing. The room was clean, with a warm, inviting atmosphere.

Hope that helps,

Marlie
