"Violent crime, including armed robbery, homicide and sexual assault is a concern throughout the Dominican Republic," the department said in its advisory. "The wide availability of weapons, the use and trade of illicit drugs, and a weak criminal justice system contribute to the high level of criminality on the broader scale."

The posts MUST be related to the DR and the advisory issued, not about other US cities. These advisories come out periodically so nothing really new.

In 2022 there were 1394 homicides in the DR with a population of about 11 million.

Again, this thread is about the advisory issued for the Dominican Republic, NOT US cities. Keep posts on topic.

The thread is about a US warning about DR travel. Why not allow a discussion about both as it relates to the subject which is the danger of travel?

Because this forum is about the Dominican Republic, not what is going on in cities outside of the DR. The advisory was issued for the DR. Posts need to be on topic.

Then why talk about baseball players in the USA who get suspended?
First of all, the posts about baseball players suspended are Dominican players therefore related to the forum Dominican Baseball. So, to sum it up Reilleyp, posts must be DR related. Thanks

How many of those were tourists?

At the end of the day, travel warnings from the USA are geared mostly to tourists.

Dominicans are generally unaware of any travel warnings from the US or any country and the few that know they exist don't bother reading them. They go by what info they get from gossip and the media.

One of my clients who visited the DR previously, texted me within minutes of the news release, which was a headline on a major news network. My previous message was edited. As a result my post appeared as though I was being an alarmist about DR travel, when I was not.

Level 2 is about the BEST rating we have gotton in years. Its all about selling the news.

Wrong. Before this we were level 1 (normal exercise of caution), now level 2 (increased travel caution). Then we do not care that live here, but potential tourist might.

This is happening because of how a certain war is being fought in both countries where I hold passports. This will not improve unless and until that changes.

Not everything posted by the US State Department/CIA/other US government agencies about other countries is true or accurate. For example, in the CIA World Factbook report on the DR it says there is marked income inequality in the DR, when in reality there is greater income inequality in other Latin American countries and the same CIA source never mention that in the reports for those countries. Even Puerto Rico has a greater inequality, but you will not read that in any report of Puerto Rico from the US government.

The travel warning to the DR from the US government is being criticized by many shows in Dominican media. They are even mentioning that there are places in the USA, such as NYC, that are visited annually by tens of millions of tourists and despite the city is increasingly becoming more dirty, smelly, and crime has increased sharply; the US government doesn't have such travel warnings.

It reminds me of the discussion of bars on the windows in highrises in the DR where some people claim it is always due to crime, but residential buildings have been burglarized by thieves penetrating through windows in NYC apartment buildings and bars on windows in such buildings idn't widespread. Its the probervial of a Dominican in NYC complaining online of the crime situation in the DR while around the corner from where they live people are being mugged and businesses robbed/shoplifting and the very same people say nothing. Or of some Dominicans in the US using the DR's shortage of passports as an opportunity to bash the DR for incompetence, yet right now the US is facing backlogs on emitting its passports but these very same people remain quiet about it. lol

The point is that you have to scratch the surface of many things to get what is the real motivation for saying those things. Not everything said by the US government of other countries is accurate and many times there is a political bias due to some sort of political pressure coming from Washington DC. Plus, one aspect of many Dominican immigrants (not all) is to justify their decision to emigrate and part of that is the denigration of the DR whenever thry grt the chance, but remain quiet about similar things where they immigrated to. This bias is naturally passed to their children as they grow up eith the constant DR bashment/denigration, At this point it becomes a psychological issue and this creates the false notion on many Dominican-Americans that everyone is out to get them from the moment they land in the DR. Many actualky think in the DR the parks are deserted because propke are afraid of being victims of crime. Little do they know you pass by plazas and parks in say Puerto Plata during the late afternoons/evenings or walk by the malecon and there are many people simply sitting on the benches and people watching, the kiosks full of people and music, etc. You think things are better right now in Ukraine during the middle of a war attack than anyplace in the DR, according to them.
