Could anyone steer me to a relativly upscale cabana west of Santo Domingo, including the ones on the west end of the Malecon. I will be arriving at SDQ mid afternoon and by the time I meet my girlfriend, pick up some supplies and head west (ultimately Barahona) it will be getting dark. To avoid driving at night I'd like to get a room by about 6-7 PM. From what I've heard some of the cabanas are pretty nice, and because they are right off the road they would be convenient also. A jacuzzi would be a plus. The ones on the west end of the Malecon may fit the bill because I could stop and get some dinner before checking in. If there are any good ones farther west (San Cristobal or Bani) I would consider them also. I would be staying overnight till 8-9AM or so. I could get a regular hotel room but I have not stayed at a cabana yet and might want to try one out if it is not to difficult or expensive. Also once I leave the capital decent roadside hotel rooms become scarce. I know I will pay more to stay all night but if I could get an idea of the price I could let my Dominican novia negotiate the details. The only info I could find on DR1 is 2 years old. Nicest Cabanas West of Santo Domingo
The Cabanas on the west end of the malecon in Haina are a little cheesy and not really suitable for a good nights sleep. I would stay in the Cabana in San Cristobal on the highway to Bani right before you enter Sancristobal or I would continue on to Bani and stay in a Cabana there not sure how nice they are but at least you won't get stuck in all the construction in the morning and the traffic between San Cristobal and Bani.
the best caba?a in santo domingo is SI o NO located in km12 of malecon.
they have the most luxury room you will find in santo domingo,
their vip is over 2,000pesos, but it is worth, if you want to impress your gf. they spent over 3 million pesos just in the decorating of any vip room. (i can tell you, because i worked in the design), regular room are 700 pesos. but still a luxury room.
their vip room, has jacussy with waterfall, 2 levels with discoteque and dinner room in first floor and the bedroom in the second level. it is very clean, and this is the only place where you can get a decent food.

In SD cabanas west (12 de Haina) you will pay the "nightly" rate (e.g. RD$ 700) after 11 pm. Any that you will be charged in 4 hour increments. Repeat: If you get in at 8 pm and want to stay till 8 am, you will be charged 3 x 4 hour block of time, NOT block till 11 pm and then overnight rate. They won't even accept Check-out and check-in.
I know because I went to Elias Pina once and coming from Higuey left too late and I didn't want to drive there at that hour. I asked around in several cabanas, was the same policy. No negotiation. I ended up waiting till 11 pm, checked in, in a cabana that looks like an old Greek town, paid RD$690, ahd the room till 11 am next morning.
They do overnight rates because their busiest time of day is 11 am to 5 pm.
Also, the room was nice, had a big plasma TV, many cable channels, music and video on demand, hot water, a disco room with disco lights and a seater, good A/C and even inexpensive food-to-order.

P.S. 12 de Haina (Doce de Haina as it's called) is a km12 of Malecon coming from SD, before the "elevado" and the toll.
Si o NO
I have seen the Si o NO cabana before and I thought it had an interesting name. It seems like that may be what I am looking for. If it is getting dark that may be as far as I get. Would anyone know about the overnight rate is for the VIP room or the regular room and the starting time for that?(PM me if you want). I was told(by an iffy source) that the overnight rates start at 10 pm at the cabanas in San Cristobal. Any suggestions for any nearby restaurants and/or discos where I could spend a few hours close to the Si o No?

It is several months later but I finally got an opportunity to try out a cabana. We entered Si o No Cabanas at 8 PM on the west end of the Malecon, or "doce" as they say. We selected an "Executivo W/ Jacuzi" because we thought that was the top end room. Rookie mistake. There is a "VIP" room that has two floors and is much nicer, but that was in use so it will have to wait for the next time. The rate for the room we got was $RD970. We asked how much until the morning and were told $RD1900 until 11AM. The room was nice with disco lights, mirrors, music system, 54" hd TV, AC and a jacuzi. There were several pieces of furniture designed for the gymnasticly inclined. It was very quiet when everything was turned off. The service (through the Lazy Suzan wall port) was good. The beer was cold the food was decent and the prices reasonable. They had a large list of food, drinks and "things" for sale( Lapela, lotion etc) available all night. Check out was easier than check in-just leave. All in all an interesting first visit. My one complaint would be the small towels. The next time I will bring my own. I would not hesitate to visit again.
