hi,

The North Coast has a lower chance of being struck by a hurricane then the south coast. I've read that the one of the biggest mountains in the caribbean is in Puerto Plata. It acts like a shelter/protecter against hurricanes. No hurricanes or tornadoes have struck the North Coast in many years....then again just another reason why the north coast is my favorite!

Jim Hinsch its ok you don't half to comment on this one!

Hi Lauren,

I too love the North however the mountains you are referring to are further south. Close to Jarabacoa, La Vega and Constanza. Pico Duarte (over 10,000 feet high) is just west of Jarabacoa. This high mountain range is in the west central part of the island.
