I need to get a copy of my passport notarized in English.
Are there any notaries down here I can use or will it require
a trip down to the US Consulate Office in the belly of the beast
(Santo Domingo) at $50 USD per page?

Are you sure you don't need it apostillized?

I don't think so. I was told just need a copy of my passport notarized to send to a bank in the states to collect some money in a US checking account which belonged to a recently deceased relative.

I live/ work here in Santiago and would like to have it done here rather than SDomingo.

Is your passport a US or DR passport?

I am not sure if a DR notary will carry any weight regarding a bank account in the US. Did you check with the bank if that will actually work? If you need a legal document that is from the DR, then almost always such documents need an Apostille. Good luck.

The Canadian Embassy does that service for Canadians, does the US consulate or Embassy not do the same for Americans?

Yes, the U.S. embassy provides this service, available in Santo Domingo, Puerto Plata and Punta Cana. Much easier in Puerto Plata and Punta Cana, just need to make an appointment. See Post #3.

If you use a local notary here in the Dominican Republic then the document will need an Apostille. Otherwise it must be notarized by a consular officer at the U.S. Consulate. If you use Guzman/Ariza you need the Apostille.

Unless something recently changed, there was no actual consul working in Puerto Plata, just the office manager who is Dominican, so the notary service was not available there. Did something change and they now have a new consul assigned to that office?

As far as Dominican lawyers notarizing a US passport (yes they have to be a lawyer to be a notary here) and then getting an Apostille for that notarization process, I would still ask the bank if they will accept that convoluted method. Best to just get the US notarization where it can be done.
