Interesting indeed, but what is so odd about these facts? Before I am crucified about this, I would like to point out that this question is out of curiosity and has no ulterior meaning.

Thanks.

Odd as in "random", rather than odd as in "strange" maybe...

Crock me Amadeus

Falco died of severe injuries received following his collision with a bus in his Mitsubishi Pajero near the city of Puerto Plata, in the Dominican Republic on February 6, 1998, just two weeks before his 41st birthday. While it was initially reported that the autopsy showed high blood levels of alcohol and cocaine, this was disputed. At the time of his death, he was working on a comeback into the music world.

According to local (Jarabacoa) legend, Mary Jo was "given" to the Cuban woman and her husband at birth (or nearly) and raised as their daughter...she was declared as the Cuban's daughter at the local Civil Registry and then at the US Consulate. Bingo, a US citizen...

No big deal and she did well....

Did you know
Lisa Marie Presley (Elvis Presley's daughter) and Michael Joseph Jackson (Jackson 5) got married May 18, 1994. The ceremony was held at Casa de Campo in La Romano, Dominican Republic. Their marriage didnt last too long.

Did you know
that there was a small town in Dominican Republic where it was discovered and documented in the early 1970's that girls turned into boys? It seems that children appearing to be girls turned into men at puberty. First girls when they reached puberty they grew testes, and a penis. They called these children 'guevedoces'

The town is Salinas in the south west, where due to in-breeding there is a high incidence of what used to be called hermaphroditism (it is also mentioned in a novel called Middlesex, by Jeffrey Eugenides). The 'girls who turn into boys' are in fact genetic males with underdeveloped male genitals that appear to be female and these children are raised as girls until the error becomes apparent at puberty.

Which somewhat perversely, leads me to ask about Porfirio Rubirosa: aren't you going to tell us about him?

Attempted British invasion of Hispaniola

In April 1655 the British first minister Oliver Cromwell ordered the invasion of Hispaniola. The two commanders; Penn (who later gave his name to Pennsylvania) and Venables, with help of 8000 troops attempted to take Santo Domingo. They were unable to land due to heavy surf, so they landed 25 miles south. This march weakened the troops who were unable to beat off two Spanish ambushes. So they decided to abandon the mission and opted to take Jamaica instead.

In Godfather II there were scenes filmed of the roof of the Hotel Embajador and scenes from the Zona Colonial. The film is set in Havana, Cuba but they could nt film there for obvious reasons.

As well as the Godfather, Santo Domingo is used to stand in for Havana in a number of movies like Robert Redford's Havana and the recent Miami Vice film. The colonial zone was also used for scenes set in Leopoldville (the Congo) in the Good Shepherd with Angelina Jolie. Other parts of the DR were used as locations in Jurassic Park.

Some Survivor-type reality TV shows are filmed in places like Los Haitises.

Drake, what about your 'tocayo' and his DR connections? ;)

Sir Francis Drake took out Santo Domingo

Concerning my "Tocayo"

In September 1585 Sir Francis Drake with 2,300 troops and 23 ships seized Santo Domingo. Considering the strong fortifications of the town they decided to land in Haina and come around the back. When they arrived the Spanish had all escaped up the Isabella river. So Drake ordered the burning of one whole block of houses every day until the ransom was paid. Eventually the owners returned to hand over the jewels and valuables they had taken with them. There's a street in the Zona Colonial where all the ladies stood in line to hand over their valuable items. After burning many Churches and houses (1/3 of the town) he withdrew taking with him the cannons and the bell of the Cathedral amongst many other things. No wonder he was known to the Spanish as the Pirate El Draque (the Dragon). In England he is a national hero..
