Can someone recommend a good eye clinic or eye doctor (an actual ophtamologist, not just an optometrist) in the capital? One who can do tests and diagnose eye diseases and such?

I am a Canadian and have diabetic retinopathy and require Eylea injections every 8 weeks. I get all my injections done in Canada and my Ophthalmologist says my eyes are looking good. I was down in Santo Domingo over Christmas and went to the Instituto Espaillat Cabral to get a second opinion. I had some eye tests done and then a consult with a doctor and was impressed by the thorough questioning and her explanation of all the tests. The cost of the consult was around 5000 pesos, so well worth going in. I was directed to make an appointment with other doctors in the clinic for more in depth diagnoses but I was happy with everything and just was looking for a second opinion.

They charged me 4500 pesos when I went in for a consultation yesterday. Not that a 500 pesos gap is a big deal, but maybe you were charged extra for being a gringo?
Mind you, I had called them a few days ago and asked them in spanish about a quote for consultation, that's when they quoted me 4500 dop.

And just as in your case, the doctor recommended a battery of additional eye tests for an extra 12 000 pesos, but due to the high cost to benefit ratio I didn't bother (she said she diagnosed high intraocular pressure and so she wanted to test further for glaucoma, which I doubt I have seeing i'm only 33).

Don’t fool around with high pressure. I know a guy diagnosed with glaucoma in his 30s.

Both myself and my husband have glaucoma, easy to treat. Both our kids (late 30s) already have high pressure.

My consult could have been 4500 just know I was happy with the price and service. If your not happy with the results go get a second opinion you only have two eyes. In Canada with my work insurance I am covered with my medications, but if I was not covered EYELEA medication that I take is $2000 canadian a shot every 8 weeks times 2. My eye disease is Diabetic retinopathy. Take Care
