Can anyone tell me if this plan/devices could solve my slow home internet situation with Codetel:

internet Orange - planes, precios y beneficios

does anybody here have any experience with this plan, is it like a modem and you hook up your own wifi routers to this?

Whats the signal like and speed, here on the North coast?

Orange does not have anything hardwired right, it gets the signal from the sky?

Don't know where you are based and I don't know if it depends on the region you are in the DR or if Orange does work better in some areas than it does in others but I had very bad experience (slow doesn't describe it well enough...) with Orange here in Bavaro and won't use it again.

I was using the "Flybox".

conchman. I dont think you have De lancer but we find them quite good - if you are at Ocean world then you really should get a Satelite system !

Forget Orange. Use Claro DSL land line if it is available. Orange is full of **** with their advertised speeds.

Im using MiFi service from VIVA, the service and speed is aceptable, you can use the device in 2 diferents ways, connected to your laptop that is when you get faster speed or like WiFi where you can connect 3 divices, is very small and you can take it with you and the batery last long 3 and sometimes 4 hrs.

You can test the service, you just only have to pay a secure deposit of arround 4,000.00 pesos that is the price of the Mifi in prepaid service, recharge service for 1 day.

I have the prepaid service, you add credit to your MiFi number and later from the computer you have to select how many days of service do you want, you can have service for 1 day, 3 days and 8 days. I always chose 8 days and pay arround 330.00. Its unlimited, the only problem is that the MiFi service is CDMA and the service is limited only to CDMA Coverage Area, maybe in your area you can get the service.

Are you saying viva is cdma only If so does that mean a cdma phone works there?

No, viva is CDMA and GSM but his CDMA coverage is limited and the MiFi service and Internet 3G runs over CDMA, GSM Coverage is biger, the 3G service is only for modems they do not have Data Plans for CDMA phones, if you have CDMA phone they activate it but you only can Talk.

I am very happy with my Flybox. I have been using it everyday for almost 3 years now. Do a search about all my posts on that topic.

My flybox experience:
First month...great
Second month...good
third month....terrible
fourth month....... even worse
fifth month.............returned the damn thing
13th month......finally go them to remove all charges and stop sending monthly bill that they attached to our phone bill.

I would think that the quality of service from an Orange Fly Box isn't the system or hardware themselves, it's more a function of how many users are in the pipe at the same time.

If one person gets one in a given area and raves to his friends...who also go for FB (or banda ancha, or...)...then the pipe gets filled up quickly and service for all slows down until Orange builds a bigger pipe...which seems none of the wireless networks do quickly.

As frustrating as Codetel DSL can be, I'm not so sure there are consistent better/equal alternatives. And even they run into problems with bandwidth and proximity to server issues.

I am not a computer expert. Originally I wanted to get Claro but 2 "customer service" agents wanted 5 b.s. job/personal references so i told them chao and walked over to Orange. Same day i walked out w the Orange plan. I have the Orange Modem with their 910 pesos a month plan here in Santiago. Internet is great for email and internet surfing. Video is often slow. For some reason the internet on my 2010 HP mini runs faster than on my 2013 Kindle Fire.. cant figure that one out.

best internet is free internet... next time you see a tricom or aster truck in your neighborhood, ask the tech how much for a fixed modem. you pay him around 4000RD and he hands you a hacked modem that works for free (1.5mb down, .7 mb up). ive been doing this for the past 6 years with hardly any interruptions in service. In these 6 years ive been offline for a total of 5 days due to a problem that affected even paying customers. dont forget to get the guys number so you can call him directly when a problem arises.

in this country, you're either part of the problem or part of the solution. since there is no solution well then...

or

when in rome.....

I am in Puerto Plata and currently use Claro dsl. I am trying to find something faster. I heard Orange flybox works well (sometimes) in Sto Dgo, but not very good anywhere else. I have two big dishes with Dishnetwork, but there might a problem with the location being outside the US, I dont wanna tip them off and lose my TV channels. Does anybody have Dishnetwork internet here in the country?
