Maybe Inflation?

Things always become more expensive as time passes. Makes pesos/ dollars so it definitely makes (cents) sense.

whether you have residency or not, most people travel often enough not to have much concern about the higher exit fees. With my addiction to golfing and shopping I am rarely here longer than 6 weeks straight.

It’s been YEARS since it was 1000 pesos. Last schedule it was 2500.

Exactly, this is a bit of hype post, and 2 months late, if I remember right, it's been 2500 for as long as maybe 10 or 15 years. And I very much doubt it increases again in the summer...!
Residency lawyers on exaggeration overdrive for 2024 ... , business must be slow...😂

Out of curiosity, I would like to know how many expats (%) use lawyers to get their residency. I'm asking this as I realize many people don't know perhaps enough Spanish to go through the process themselves so the lawyers help there, but the process as such I don't find to be that complicated... Just my opinion though...

I do! My Spanish is more than good enough to do it on my own I just don´t go to Santo Domingo more than absolutely necessary, use a lawyer makes it smooth. I don´t mind San Pedro and La Romana, Santo Domingo is for me a no go unless I have no choice.

1,000 DOP overstay fee must have been last century.

Thanks, that's a good point... I used to like going to the capital as well, but that was years ago... I like the whole area south of 27 de febrero, but the trick is to get there, which I absolutely hate...

3500 = $65 usd is nothing.
See what other countries charge or the cost of getting residency.

Compared to being an illegal what is the cost?
If it is offered by the Dominican Government how could it be illegal? Only been in place for over 20 years. You need to get out in the street and stop the Motos riding on the sidewalk, or the wrong way on a one way street. THAT IS ILLEGAL..............

Uhm, Go back to when DR1's legal team called the exit fines an "extra-legal workaround".
When I posted the actual law that shows the true duration of a "tourist card" the mods wanted to ban me again.
PRM's ancestors wrote the laws the year before the PLD took over for 16 years, and they have been ignored since then...

I drive around the motos..

I've had to deal quite a bit with the migracion.gob.do website, so based on this:

Cálculo para Pago de Estadía o Permanencia
"Nota: A partir de los diez (10) años, cada año o fracción, aumentará RD$7,000.00. Este pago no es una prórroga que autoriza al extranjero a permanecer en el país."

As far as I can understand, it would seem that indeed, the overstay fee does not make you a "legal" as such... I have never thought of this but unless I'm overseeing something, this would confirm it. There is another thing "prorroga", that expats/tourists/whatever can apply for before their papers are not valid anymore to ask for more time, AND you can go and apply for residency with expired visa by paying a few DOPs (Cálculo para Pago Penalidad Visa Vencida), but just by paying that fee would be just to get out of the country...

Funny story: Years ago, when we traveled to the EU the first and the second time, migration officers actually scolded us on POP airport as they saw we were married but I was still just overstaying... They wanted nothing bad for us, just asking, why would you want to pay this multa when you can just go an apply for residency...

A very reasonable fee from two months to one year.

The cumbersome process of residency and renewals is not worth it for shorter stays.
I have not heard of any foreigner married to a Dominican with children being booted out, unless engaged in criminal activities.

The easy and logical way would be charge DOP 5600 for a six month stay including driving.

Streamline permanent residency for anyone who stays more than six months, with a one time application processed in three months.
Applications should be possible in every provincial capital.

Dreaming, as logical process seems to be impossible.
