In case you missed it FM98 is playing the Pepegate salsa using an old Willy Colon salsa with vocals from master salsa singer Hector Lavoe called "Mis Mejores Pregones", one of the all-time great salsas. Here are the lyrics:

PEPEGATE song(With best literal English translation below each line)

No me dejen solo, porque no caigo solo...Hipolito!
Don't leave me alone, 'cause I ain't gone down alone..Hipolito!

I am Pepe Goico, a very popular guy, and for being such a menace, now they want to lock me up, I'm in the press night and day, for Baninter's sake and the lottery too, they accuse me of beating up and pushing reporters, for those holy planes and abusing my influence.

They stop me in the streets, a lot of people say;"Oye pepegate, you got it made, the president supports you, everyone asks if I feel bad, if I cry, if for that bank account I'm going to jail.

I am Pepe Goico because I was made to rule, and the more they talk and talk the less they're going to lock me up....ay whooo!

I am Pepe Goico, controversial whereever I am, but when I put my foot in my mouth they want to fire my ass, yet I keep on going laughing and crying, I am not alone in this.

I am Pepe Goico because I am here to rule, and for those who throw darts at me, here I am going to improvise.

(Choir)I dedicate today my prayer, is salsa for fun, salsa to dance, to get lose, greetings to Mazourka, Juan Bautista and his millions, Victor Tio wants to sing, but I am not letting him, I am better than those before me and to the critics...compare me.

END......see now interesting notes
-For those who want the original lyrics by Willy Colon and Hector Lavoe go to www.salsamor.com/lyrics/lavoe/elcantante/html.
-Pepegate lyrics were also published in the El Diario Libre last saturday giving credit to El Master DJ for mixing the song on Rumba FM.
-The refernce in the song to several names are past corruption characters very familiar to Dominicans. Mazourka was Pepe Goico's accomplice in the $90 million lottery scandal. Juan Bautista was famed for being a cabinet member stopped for a traffic violation. The AMET agent didn't know who he was. They found a cache of cash and sophisticated weapons in the back of his jeepeta enough to star a war. He told the press this was for his personal protection...hehehehe! That was everyone's reaction. He was never accsued of anything. Victor Tio is the famed Housing Authority Chief who sold government lots worth over $3000 a meter for $5 to his friends and family. He is still in jail. Of course, the song glorifies Pepe as the best and most corrupt of all. Nobody beats Pepe at his own game.hahahaha!
Have fun!!!!

I think it is great when they make up songs to describe the corruption and other misbehavior of their leaders. This is an art form in Trinidad. When there I attended many calypso concerts where the songs were as fresh as the week's newspapers.
