Politur cautious lately?

According to recent information, the tourist police (Politur) adjusted it's policy the last few days. The Politur seems to be more cautious and quiet than before. What happened?
Last week a committee of the Ministry of Tourism of Santo Domingo and the Ministry of Health (Salud P?blico) visited Sos?a. They do this almost every year, they check the local restaurants and bars if they live up to the hygiene rules. They also check the tax payments and permits.

Politur cautious lately? During the inspection tour, the committee members were overwhelmed with complaints from the owners. The complaints were primarily about the aggressive arrests by the Politur of street vendors and women walking alone and the negative impression this makes on the tourists. These arrests were frequently filmed by tourists and put on YouTube and this led to a wave of negative news about Sos?a. Moreover, the committee itself found out that many bars and restaurants were closed and in other places there was little clientele. They decided to suspend their tour of inspection and to go in consultation with the Mayor Ilana Neumann and the commander of the Politur. What they exactly discussed in the consultation and what the findings are is not yet disclosed. It seemed that the mayor was very upset by the decline of the restaurants and bars in business. Now we see that the last few days the Politur is more cautious and quiet.
It looks like and we hope that Sos?a will regain its valued conviviality.

What????? I thought the "clean-up" of Sosua was a mutual collaboration of both the police AND the mayor's office. :speechles:speechles

And what did they, the mayor and police, think would happen when one does things that aren't conducive to having convivial environment in town????? :surprised

No, more like a town in turmoil could be the impression of the atmosphere lately.......:eek:gre:

They likely scared away potential visitors by their ongoing pogrom of late !!!!!!!!!!! :speechles:speechles

Mayor Ilana Neumann is not in control of Politur, nor is the kind of person to be a flip-flopper...
The caution and shock from the Mayor comes at no surprise given how local authorities act, in carrying out multi-agency programs all the time.

Kuddos to the Mayor for having the grit to face the problems that are really "killing" the once promising town and tourist's spot!

As Eddy and others who live in Sosua have explained numerous times, the mayor does not control Politur or AMET. If you believe she does, then you also have to believe that a local mayor controls organizations like the State Police in the US.

There's no quotes or interviews in that article. So it's just a reporter trying to conjure up some drama.

When the Ministry of Tourism went in the Mayors office, they probably Hi-Fived each other.

I think most of what "we" hear a rumors... few may be somewhat close to the truth, some intentionally false and created to put the blame on the wrong person.
Many believed the rumor that the new "Lady" Mayor was the intellectual creator of the crack down against "loose" chicas.
I always questioned this rumor as I've seem similar actions taking place around Puerto Plata with a mayor of the opposite party.
Yet, in earlier interviews about this very issue and it's impact on local business', she was quoted to have said: "a nosotros no nos importa, NO queremos este tipo de turismo!". NOW, she starts to feel the heat and feel sorry for her constituents, REALLY?

Who ever it is, and what ever the "reasoning" would be, the one thing that really leaves me perplex is, that NOBODY simply makes the argument that the whole crack down is UNCONSTITUTIONAL on the grounds of discrimination against women, chicas, cueros... what ever, FEMALES. Period.
Have any MEN been arrested for sitting alone at a bar? NOPE.

I am NOT in favor of prostitution, I see the devastator effect on "families" -especially children- to closely, but I am vehemently AGAINST it's prohibition.
Yes, most of Sosua, thrives directly or indirectly from sex tourism. Many have tried to refute this, but now, that it is/was shut down, many of those are among the moaning.

There are those who theorize that whole thing was a ploy to run Sosua dry so that "they" could come in and revamp Sosua into a luxury destination. Sosua = Punta Cana? Really? As some who knew warned years ago, "they" (who ever "they" may be) haven't even been able to make ANYTHING out of the El Tablon clearout. NADA.
So now, they ploy would be to bleed Sosua and the WHOLE of it into what?? Gimme a break!

If I had learned only ONE thing here, HA! Never try to find the logic behind what theses countries' "authorities" do or don't do... especially when in only starts with random and often completely illegal prohibitions and destruction. You can NEVER explain it with logic.

It'll go away, our dear Johns need not worry. The process is too tedious and this country is not known for steadfastness over a long time period. It'll fizzle, just like most everything else.
Remember the helmets for "motores"? The spook has about fizzled out... just about ("They" have sold enough helmets... it's all good now).
