poppy seeds

in poland that stuff is super popular, very common and cheap. we bake lots of sweets with poppy seeds filling (ground and flavoured). recently i saw a bag in la sirena, bought it (despite hefty price tag) and baked this:

today i served a piece to our maintenance guy (he liked it) and tried to explain what he was eating. i used spanish wiki for common names for poppy plant:
Castellano: ababolones, adormidera (38), adormidera blanca, adormidera lunar (2), adormidera negra, adormideras, adormideras blancas, adormilera, almidera, amapola (3), amapola blanca, amapola de adorno, amapola real (5), amapolona (2), anapola de la droga, anapola real, apio dormidera (2), cascal (3), cascales (2), dormidera (13), dormideras, dormideras blancas, hierba cascales, hierba dormidera, marijuana, opio, papaver blanco, papola, papoya. La scifras entre paréntesis indican la frecuencia del uso del vocablo en España.

he did not know any of them. miesposo also claimed that poppy is called something different in dominican spanish.

Wow, I haven't had Poppyseed bread (that's what we called it growing up) in years. My mom and grandmother used to make it around all holidays. I would cut a piece off while still hot and melt some butter over it.
They also baked what we called nut bread, baked and looked the same on the outside but inside had nuts in some sort of sauce (walnuts I think).

well, my question was more linguistic in nature but yeah, poppy seeds in baking are pretty delish.
i looked at spanish label on the bag (there is an obligation to place it on imported goods) but it only says "bob's red mill" and then nutritional data below. i tore off the rest to see a recipe on the bag so if it had any further description it's lost now.

The only translation of poppy seeds in Spanish (my mother tongue but not Dominican) I know of is  semillas de amapola.

Remember don't eat poppyseeds the night before lab tests at migration. You'll test positive for heroin.

Amapola is poppy (the flower) in standard Spanish, so semillas de amapola is the correct name, but in the DR amapola is the name the Spanish colonists gave to the tree with the orangey-red blossom that grows on the mountainsides, presumably because it reminded them of poppy fields from a distance.

I always have to remember to say "con popisid" instead of "con semillas de amapola" when ordering bagels here.

At Chef Pepper they always ask if I want my Forest Burger with pan sesame or pan poppy......are these the same poppy seeds? I think I'm Dutch we call it moon seeds (maanzaad)

Sesame are flat, oblong shaped, blondish or light brown in color. Poppy seeds are spherical and black.

Yes. Rolls are sometimes topped with poppy seeds.
