BTW- some usage is idiomatic. It is a fixed phrase in Spanish and not a word for word translation.

It is basic, but so easy to make mistakes. I know I always said Gracias para...Which is wrong, but it took me a while to loose that habit for some reasons.

Muy bien. Así se aprende.


Also probably as you heard more Spanish without realizing it you became used to hearing gracias por and you caught your own error after a while. Like you said it did not sound right.

Also it’s like when students or adults who are learning say prepararse por. That is not correct and it sounds strange to me. It is prepararse para. Certain prepositions follow certain verbs in Spanish. It’s best to learn the verb + the preposition. For ex, olvidarse de.

I am sure there is but I just did a quick search and the lists in Spanish only have a few examples.

This grammar topic is called phrasal verbs if you want to do a Google search.
