Preliminary Report Released on Jet Set Club Collapse

On April 15th, 2025, a preliminary technical report was released regarding the structural collapse of the well-known Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, on April 8th, when part of the roof caved in during the night. The report, led by civil engineer Piter J. Bonilla, provides initial insights into what went wrong.

According to the report, the building that housed Jet Set was originally constructed as a movie theater back in the 60s or 70s. These types of buildings were designed with large, open spaces and no internal columns, relying instead on massive concrete beams spanning up to 25 meters. While great for watching films, this design turned out to be problematic once the building was converted into a nightclub.

Over the years, many heavy systems were added to the roof: industrial air conditioners, generators, water tanks, and transformers. These additions were not part of the original structure and placed huge stress on the building—around 4,000 kg of extra weight in the central area alone. Combine that with constant vibrations from sound systems, mechanical equipment, and years of water leakage and humidity, and the result was a slow, silent weakening of the entire structure.

The report points out that the structure was likely deteriorating for years. There were probably visible signs like cracks, sagging areas, and water stains that went unnoticed or unaddressed. Over time, all these issues worked together to reduce the strength of the concrete and cause fatigue in the support beams. Eventually, it all gave out.

Among the report's recommendations are stronger rules for converting old buildings for new purposes, regular structural inspections, and proper drainage systems to prevent water from pooling on rooftops. It also suggests that regulations should require structural reviews when installing heavy equipment on aging buildings.

This report is still preliminary. Final conclusions will depend on further investigation and material testing, but it offers a clear warning: buildings may hide dangerous flaws for years until something breaks. And when it breaks, it can be catastrophic.

For expats and locals alike, this should be a wake-up call about safety in public spaces, especially older structures that have been heavily modified without updated engineering assessments, specially if you're acquiring a property in an old building.

We've attached the report for those of you who are curious to dive in (It's written in Spanish).

These are all things DR1 readers analyzed only seeing photos and hearing reports and common logic. Building owner and managers must have been warned of many of these issues prior - but kept banking Jetset bank deposits.

But even when issues are pointed out to Dominican authorities or property owners in advance of failures or tragedies they take no preventive action. God help they would have to spend money.

They wait until failures occur. This one unfortunately is headline news because it killed hundreds of people, many of them famous.

Somewhere else a road will collapse from obvious erosion, an electrical pole that was leaning for years will fall, a power line overgrown by trees will short out or a neighborhood will be inundated with flood waters because warnings about a lack of drainage design were ignored.

In DR corrective action only occurs after a failure, and even then only for a brief minute. This is the mentality present on the island.

Thousands of "properly trained" engineers are needed and granted with power to make politicians and municipal authorities take immediate corrective actions when harm is imminent.

Government exists with the grace of its citizens. It's time officials understand it is not the opposite.

This happens elsewhere, things/signs go ignored, then tragedy hits and it is "could have, would have and should have" mode. Not saying it is an excuse for what happened with the Jet Set. But it happens everywhere, sad but true.

Two questions: So now suddenly, the building was not redesigned nor altered by removing the columns and two, where did that report come from, no sources aside from the name of the engineer? Just one person?

I was also under the impression interior columns were removed to open up the venue space. It wasn’t mentioned in this preliminary report. A glaring omission.

I might be overthinking, but again, that report was rather short, no sources, nothing that really looks official and information presented that in this sense contradicts to a few previous news stories. I would assume that any official report, preliminary or not, would need to have govt stamps etc, this paper has nothing. Anyone can write a report and put their name on it.

Also, just found this, appears that this is about this report:

So it's not even based on any physical evidence, just on the photos published??? The article also admits that this is no official report. I think the OPs post is pretty misleading.

A "Law Firm" new member posting that stuff without any backup of any authenticy of anything official, well, i guess that "Lw Firm" could easily be sued for anything, lol.
I am used to Guzman Arriza being the DR1 legal expert. It would be nice for this new law firm to present itself.

2 things: The title of the thread is "Preliminary report", so read into what you will. Next, the OP is posting just as others have on this topic. So, let's just keep with the topic.

I realize the above, but at least for me, it bothers that their name on the forum is not like "just another poster" but, they are in fact promoting to be a law firm and their posts also are more structured than those from others. This combined with the fact that the information they post might not be the most accurate is what bothers me. So the way they present themselves, it would give them more credibility but the content what they present takes that credibility away.

In case anyone missed It, preliminary means more will go into the report for it’s final version.
