Hi, I'll be visiting DR in the next few weeks and I'll be staying there for a month. I need a cheap vehicle to get me from point A to point B. I was thinking of just buying a pasola/motoconch. Does anyone know where I can find a dealer? Btw, whats the average price if they're used? Im not looking for anything fancy. Thx

You can find a used Passola for anywhere around $10,000 RD to 15,000 RD. You can ask around peolle at repuestos ( Bike shops) or dealerships.

Assuming you know how to drive a bike, I would go with an actual bike over a pasola, just for the wheel size. Small wheels + big potholes = wipeout.
Then, I would rent for that short a period of time. If it's in the Sosua area, get in touch with me and I will tell you how to go about it so it doesn't cost too much.

I agree with you Rocky, for a month it is not worth the hassle of buying, getting matricula etc etc.
I bought a pasola for my son 2 weeks ago, a used one, but in good condition.
8.000 pesos.
Most offered was in the price range you mention, around 12.000..in all kinds of conditions..lol

Just to clarify
A pasola would be what you want - a moped
A moto - is a motorcyle/yamaha style
A motoconcho is a motorcyle taxi

A pasola is actually a scooter.
A moped is a motorized pedalbike.
A moto is any motorbike of any size.
A motoconcho is any brand of bike that is used to transport paying passengers.
On the North coast, most use Yamaha 115's, but in other areas, they might use the 4 stroke Honda 70's.

I live in SD and ride a Kawasaki WND 125. I paid 45,000 pesos for it.

I love it and wouldn't change it for anything. The gas is cheap, it has great shocks etc. and I NEVER sit in the famous SD traffic.

Before you buy a motorcycle stop and think about the risks. If you are willing to accept the risks and drive defensively then go ahead and buy one.

Also, make sure you know the bike....what it will do and won't do...stop short...bob and weave....know your bike and know the roads.

Be careful!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the replies. The reason I wanted to buy one instead of renting is b/c I will be making more frequent trips and to tell you the truth, I just always wanted one for the dominican feel of it lol... But anyway, I was looking to spend at most $1500 but now that you guys mentioned kawasaki's i wouldnt mind owning a better brand. Anyone have a price quote on a honda cruiser? I'll probably just get either that or a ninja. Im willing to go up to $5,000 for the right bike. If anyone can point me to a dealer I'd appreciate it. Thx

Do you know how to ride a motorcycle??
Do you know what a ninja is??
Do you know what a honda cruiser is??
From your posts it appears that you don't know jack about motorcycles and probably don't know how to ride one, please don't get yourself killed over here just so you can get the "dominican feel of it"

Now, a Ninja a/k/a ZX10, ZX9R, ZX7R, ZX6R, etc.. is useless in this country, roads are bad, meaning you will bottom out all the time and you will get tired staying in low gear all the time.
Now, a "honda cruiser" Valkyrie, etc.. poor choice on bad roads since you will probably be bottoming out all over the place and the fact that you will lower back problems since your spine will be compressed from hitting potholes and bumps on the road, since you will not being able to stand on the pegs and ride over the bumps, like you could if you had a dirt bike or standard, trust me you will hit bumps and potholes.

You should look into getting a small cc dirtbike, i.e. 125cc or 250cc
