Public Health Minister acknowledges the impact of Duquesa fire on Covid-19 patients, clear skies on Tuesday

Fire brigades are hard at work to put the fire at the Duchess’ dump under control. By the early morning of Tuesday, 5 May, the dense smoke that had affected the inhabitants of Greater Santo Domingo had diminished and Greater Santo Domingo awoke to almost normal skies. Rains forecast for Tuesday and Wednesday in the afternoon, are expected to clear the air even more.

Public Health Minister, Dr. Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas, in the Covid-19 press briefing on Monday, 4 May 2020, had admitted the smoke from the dump could aggravate the health of patients suffering from acute respiratory infections such as influenza and Covid-19. He acknowledged that 80% of the people affected by the disease are recovering at home and are likely to suffer complications from the smoke.
