Puerto Plata skylift shut down; thousands of tickets pre-sold

The Puerto Plata Skylift recently announced a total revamping of the cable car system. In the meantime, visitors can take the road to the top to visit the botanical garden on top of Isabel de Torres Mountain. The problem now is how to reimburse all those who bought in bulk pre-paid tickets for cruise ship passenger travelers and touring visitors.

The investigation regarding the safety of the cable cars basically say that they aren’t fit to be in use. Anything might happen at any moment. They are simply playing it safe to suspend service and basically the PP Teleférico will be updated. Once that happens it will open again.

I don’t think the issues are the cables. I think it was last year that they changed them for new ones. The real issue must be the cable cars themselves, the tower on the mountain side or both. They are both original to the teleférico which was built in the 1970’s.

I see 2 problems here. First why would anyone risk their lives on a ride in a Dominican cable car. You would have to be nuts to expect any type of honest actual inspections. Second you have to be even more nuts to prepay for anything in the DR. Good luck trying to get that money back

That cable car in Pto. Plata was closed down a just a couple years ago when it broke down and riders were trapped on it for a long time. I thought it had been completely renovated then(?).

The cables have been changed every year of operation right before the December crowd arrives. The issue now is that the machinery used to move the cables has worn out after 50 years in a humid marine climate. Now is a good time to do it also. With commuter aerial trams being built in Santo Domingo, the same company can do the project in Puerto Plata.

I’ve done it. Very enjoyable

I'm sure it was very enjoyable. I have been on the ones in Banff and Jasper national parks and it's incredible. My concern is after 17 years here I know how things are done. I do not trust that maintenance here is done to an acceptable standard. Just look around how everything else is done.
I don't think "Safety First" is a mantra that is used in the DR. "Fill my pockets with cash while I look the other way" is more fitting to DR culture.
