Hey guys quick question on transportation. Does anyone have actual knowledge of once arriving in Punta Cana on how to get to the Bayahibe hotel area? I know its a bit of a trip but the airline ticket was a HUGE savings rather then flying in closer.

Get a taxi from the airport, or rent a car. You would have to take at least three buses: one to Higuey, then one to La Romana and ask to be dropped off at the Bayahibe crossing, and then one more to Bayahibe. Could take hours to cover a relatively short trip (45 min drive).

Chiri is absolutely right; however, if you're looking to save, as your post suggested, then maybe a couple of hours of bus travel is worth it. A Taxi will bite into what you saved on your flight. $100US or more. If by "hotel area" you mean you'll be staying in a hotel, call them to see if they can provide transportation for you, and if not, ask them for bus route information. In my experience, bus transportation in the DR is reliable, efficient, and the drivers and cobradores (the conductor) are honest and helpful. Just be clear and communicate exactly where you're wanting to get.

The one kicker is that you'll probably need to take a taxi to the Friusa bus station to get you started.

You actually don't have to go to the Friusa station. You can get the express bus to La Romana at Coco Loco intersection - but that is some distance from the airport too. If this is your first trip here, I don't recommend trying to make this work - especially if you have a suitcase more than very small. Friusa will probably be easier. But, to get there in taxi will cost 30/40 dollars from the airport. You could take the gua gua (local bus), but that is challenging too if you don't know how to do it. Once you know, it is fairly easy depending on how comfortable you want to be : ) And from La Romana, you can take the gua gua to Bayahibe also. 60 pesos. But not particularly comfortable for a newbie either. The $100 taxi is looking better I would think. The suggestion to call the hotel and ask is good too.

I don't know where you are flying from but next time if you land in La Romana it's only 15 mins from Bayahibe and only a $30 cab ride.

I can never understand the cost of savings on the airline ticket vs convenience of being close to your final destination when you are vacation. You will spend the better part of the day getting there wasting vacation time.

Easy...

Let me break it down for you:

Flying to SDQ is for me a saving of 200$/per ticket than Catey (AZS)...And I have a pick of days/time when I want to fly (not just 1 flight on wednesday and saturday...see if I am not due to work till monday, I am flying sunday, sometimes monday early am, but that s another subject). I have 2 children, so that amounts to $600 (Grand ma is coming this time so even more ! )

So yes, I am adding a 2.5 hr road trip to get to LT and will use the money somewhere else, because I will be there for a couple of weeks so a few extra hours is no big deal to me.

Get it ? :)

There's merit in what you say. The OP did not say he was on vacation though. He did say he appreciates savings as well broken down by Africaida.

I know many French who hops on a high speed train to fly from Brussels, because they have INSANE deal out of Brussels that you will never, ever find on Air France to DR.

There are also a few of us who like the ride with a few guaguas thru the jungle, besides saving money.
