Have never been to Punta Cana but we are booked for our 4th trip to Puerta Plata which is just a short plane ride west of Punta Cana. We have always enjoyed good weather. It does rain but it has the good grace to get it done in five or ten minutes and then go away. The hurricane season is well past (usually by the end of November). I have been getting the DR1 newsletter for several years now and have seen no mention of bad weather past hurricane season. I DO NOT think that that is merely public relations from the tourist bureau either as it seems to the news is fairly unbiased in everything they report.
Bring light sweaters as it can chill down to 18-22 C in the mornings and should be about 22-25C in the evenings. Otherwise, you should have sunny skies, some clouds, windy (depending on your hotel) and very pleasant day temperatures of 25-30 C. Bring lots of sun screen.
