Punta Cana or Puerto Plata

Is there really that big a difference between these two. I was at Puerto Plata 3 years ago and have been to Punta Cana the last two years but I really don't remember that big a difference between the two beaches. Of course when I was in Puerto Plata is was my 'first time' so I'm probably not remembering too well. That's why I'd like others input on this. We really aren't the type to lay out on the beach all day anyways so does it really matter. Doesn't it depend more on the resort itself? Any input would be great!

Punta Cana does have a nicer beach from a SAND point-of-view; it's softer and whiter; not to say that the Puerto Plata beaches aren't beautiful as well! The main difference between the two cities isn't the beach, it's the fact that there is NO local town off the complex in PC for miles! Whereas, POP has it's town within 5 minutes off the resort complex - so it depends what you are looking for in a vacation... if you want to have fun, mix with the locals and experience the REAL DR, don't go to PC!

The beaches and the hotels in the Bavaro Punta Cana area are definitely nicer than the ones in Puerto Plata, not only nicer but cleaner. If you would like to go out a lot, there is more to do at the north coast.

The Beach is much nicer not to mention the expansive coconut jungle which makes Punta Cana one of the most spectacular beaches in the world. A nature lovers paradise. Just a matter of what you are looking for.

North Coast.... of course!!! Like Phyllis says, here on the north coast you can experience both ... hotels and local hangouts and real Dominican life.... happy holidays wherever you chose to go....

Much better jungle and prettier views in the north if you ask me. Take a drive to Samana and i am sure you will agree. PC is too flat, and has no towns, just resorts. North coast has it all...the sand isn't as white, but it depends what you are after. Beach for 7 days straight? PC. Shops, restaurants, cool hangouts on the beach, windsurfing...POP area.

I agree with most, but my experience at Punta Cana was that it tended to be windy. Out of 10 days I was there 6 or 7 were too windy to sit on the beach and they acutally used equipment to move sand back onto the beach!. At first I marked it up to random chance, but I've seen a number of posts from people that say it does tend to be much windier (is that a word?). I'm headed back to POP this year.

But, If you're like me, it takes a lot to spoil my escape from madness.
