I met with a lawyer last week had he told me I needed to return to Australia (or the place of my passport ) and have my passport stamped with a residence visa, then return to the DR and apply for temporary residency.

A RESIDENCY VISA from the Dominican Consulate or Embassy in the country of origin prior to arrival.

I wrote to the South Australian Honorary consul Andrew Lathlean asking about it and where I send my passport once I do go back.
Here told me.
There is no Embassy in Australia and therefore you cannot "file" any documents.
The Embassy with responsibility for Australia is London, and that is why I referred you to speak with them before making arrangements with me.

So the question is. Where do I go to apply for this stamp? London?

Any Ozzies out they that have just done this?
Anyone else have any ideas?

It is 100% clear the info you have there. No need to look any longer. Youll have to deal with london. Do you really need the recisency? Looks like ull spend lots of money to go to london. Not even ur home country so more spending to be done

Well I wish it was just that easy..

I email London and did not have this question answered at all.
They could not tell me if needed to go there to get the residence visa, they just sent me the old form and requirement paper work list.

Believe me I would much rather go across the pond than across the world to do this. LA to SYD 17hr.

Have you been a) living in DR for some time, and b) do you have Dominican spouse or child? If that is the case, that both a) and b) hold true in your case, there is option to get the visa at the Dominican MInistry of foreign affairs in Santo Domingo, through the right persons and for about 10,000 pesos processing fee.

aquapon I think I may be able to help you as a friend had exactly the same problem ,,she lived in NSW ,Firstly make sure that you have at least 3 copies of the modern birth certificate . Then from experience I can tell you that the closest Dominican embassy or consulate that has the authority to issue a residency visa is Italy or the USA none in Asia and none in South America have the authority . But if your lawyer is street wise you will go to the external countries office, between Malecon and Independencia and plead your case and they should issue youwith the residency visa there ...BUT you have to grease a few palms ...That is how my friend did it ..cost her 20,000 pesos cheaper than an air flight .. I t may take a week then youproceed to immigration as normal ..IS not your fault there is noembassy available in all of Asia and Australasia

Things were better under "Hipolito"!!!!!!!

Well I got a reply from the London DR embassy. It seem I will have to go to London to get this visa..
But they fail to answer how long it would take, so I should have almost all the info by tomorrow one they get back to me with that answer.
Cost is 250 ponds.......
But i am not going to book anything until I have this confirmed by at least one other source.

Never mind, I just found somebody who does residencies starting them here instead of at the Dominican Embassy in your home country, if certain conditions apply.

if certain conditions apply. ??

Please tell?

My buddy is meeting with the person who is going to help him early next week, then I can ask him what the exact requirements are.
Send me a PM as a reminder to let you know.

The rule is you must go to the dominican consulate of your home country and apply for a residency visa. To obtain this visa, you must meet a few requirments which have been often discussed here. Once you get it on your passport, you have 2 months to go to the migration office to apply for residencia y cedula.
That means, normally, you should do that before heading to the DR, otherwise you must get back.

Thats the rule. But I mainy times heard that with the help of a lawyer you can "easiliy" get the visa and the procedure completed from the DR, yet without getting back to your home country. Of course, it will cost a bit of money but going back to a home country costs money as well... :)

Hi, I am in passport process now. Had to send documents back to Oz via Fedex to get them apostillised. That is to confirm birth certificates are correct. We have done all through a Dominican lawyer. It is worth it. Wouldn't have a clue otherwise. Cheaper than flying around the world if you ask me. :)

Cheers,
