It has been a wet Christmas for most of the Dominican Republic, but more so for the North Coast. The Presidency reported that the rains that have fallen on the North Coast in the past 50 days have been equivalent to those of an entire year.

Making matters worse, the uninterrupted rains for more than five days caused major flooding as people prepared to celebrate the Christmas holidays in Puerto Plata. The intense rains also caused landslides on the “La Turistica” mountain road, requiring major caution when using the way to Santiago.

The intense rains impacted the stays of tourists who had come to bask in the sun.

President Luis Abinader traveled to Puerto Plata to see the damages caused by the week-long of intense rains, including major flooding impacting communities in the municipality of Cabarete, Sosua and Sabaneta de Yasica, that ruined Christmas Eve...

The beach at Playa Dorado has been cut into three different beaches by the flood water and massive amounts of trees and garbage deposited on the beach. We stayed at the Grand Ventana 24-26 December, and they have cleaned their part up but much of the beach is still covered in crap. They are however making progress in cleaning it.

Cabarete, DR
Last week the local whatsapp groups were full of flooding across the province. There was even a horrible video of a man being washed away when stumbled when crossing a flooded bridge. Compared to those, the lake overflowing into the Sosua-Cabarete road seemed very minor. I suppose only the higher areas like Torre Alta did not have much impact

One might think this is a "100 year" flood, and this particular one well might be the worst in that time period. However every several years severe flooding does happen for those near rivers in the Province of Puerto Plata. I have seen it numerous times since I have lived here.
