if you mean, are there a lot of rats in the dr - yes there are.
however, if you are planning on starting a collection, don't bother, there is nothing special about dominican rats.
even the human ones are not as bad as people would lead you to believe.

giant spiders, cacatas, now that's a different story. i used to get them all over the place. hairy buggers as big as your hand.

.....jurones...watch out for those rabid bastards, you don't want to find one of those under your bed.

oh yeah, i think the big black snakes (not the green ones) eat the rats when they get the chance, but don't worry they are not venomous.

there are the odd scorpions, but they are really quite small.

watch out for those blood-sucking ticks as well - trying to get them off without popping them is not a pleasant experience, i can tell you.

If you want to see some really big rats, just go to KFC in the Winston Churchill Ave. I went yesterday and did a turnaround when I saw them at the Parking Lot.

Are they poisonous. I understand that the most poisonous scorpions tend to be the smallest ones (National Geographic Channel knowledge of course)
I honestly havent seen the first yet, but I keep hearing from people that have that ours are tiny.

Cacatas freak me out!! I've meet a couple and although they are generally non agressive, almost docile creatures, I find them visually repulsive.

You've got to be joking about the ticks!!

I stepped on a scorpion with my bare feet here at Xanadu a few months ago. At first I thought I had stepped on a wasp. Turned out to sting for a little while, but wasn't nearly as painful or long lasting as a wasp sting. In fact the bite swelled very little, and then was completely gone in an hour. Checking the web with my foot throbbing the information I found indicated that there are no poisonous scorpions here in the D.R.

I do keep benadryl capsules on hand for stings like this for me, and for the kids. We also have a little suction plunger to suck the venom out. That helps, too.

P.S.
But the rats! Don't know what's been going on but it's been bad here for the last month. We finally have killed most but for a while we were trapping, or poisoning, two or three a night. Walked outside to the pool a week ago at night, and in pool area lights I saw one of the little buggers running up and down a small palm tree. I thought it was a lizard at first! Ah well, welcome to paradise!

Amy!

Please. It wasn't trying to join us for Christmas dinner! It was just stepping outside for a smoke after a three-way-rat-orgy in the house that was going on while we were eating on the patio.

my house is in the middle of an open wild field - so all kind of creepy animals and insects sometimes try to occupy my place.
I'm fine with most insects, snakes and rats - as long they stay outside.

Rats love bananas. I have banana trees in the garden and specially at night we can hear them runing up and down the trees. I have to cut the bananas from the tree when they are still green and hang them somewhere "rat proof" to get yellow. If not, the rats eat them all.
Last year was very bad, when the rats discovered how easy they can eat themselves through the mosiquito screens and enter into the house through the windows. They found immediately the dog food and within a few days we had the biggest, healthiest rats with beautilful shiny fur, fed with Pedigree Pal!
It was very hard to get rid of them until we finally got a cat who is doing a good job.

I heard from a friend who had similar problem with rats entering the house. He got two big snakes (Boa Constricta) and they got rid of all the rats within a few days.

Natural pest control in paradise.

Thanks for the info on the rats. I'm deathly afraid of rats since I had an encounter with one many years ago in the barn. I'm going to be leaving for the DR in 3 weeks and I just had to know so I could prepare myself. All I can do is hope that where we are staying that they do a rat patrol, have a cat or snake!! thanks again for the replies.

it's never actually happened to me, but i've been told you can get a nasty sting(?) from them.

don't worry....there are not many barns here.

Santo Domingo

Its Amazing to see a rat 1 feet size and huge, the groups of rats living in Santo Domingo in "Malecon" they look like a life guard during the day and at night are bigger in the dark places I called rat kidnappers. Because they take advantage to see people in panic then attack.

take care every body in Santo Domingo.

Dont leave them grab your foot.
