re: Bani Bad Man - Enrique Soto

The Washington Post featured a front page article in last Sunday's edition primarily about how the "buscandos" take advantage of generally less fortunate, but talented and aspiring Dominican ballplayers. In particular, Enrique Soto of Bani was singled out for being "King of the Buscandos", but with very negative press.

Willy Aybar, who is a good shortstop and talented hitter, caught the attention of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Before getting signed by a U.S. baseball team, The Post described how Mr. Soto sheistered Willy Aybar to allow him to manage Willy's financial affairs. After catching the attention of scouts, Willy was sought by the Dodgers with a signing ceremony at the Jaragua. Later, Willy was to receive a 1.4 million signing bonus from L.A. Dodgers in two checks.

However, Soto took possession of Willy Aybar's first signing bonus through clandestine means, forged Willy's name on the back of the check and opened a D.R. bank account for himself with $490,000. While Soto did give Willy's mother a 100,000 pesos ( a little over $6,000 U.S. dollars) and $1725. a month., Mr. Soto had no power of attorney to take Willy's money for himself.

The good news is that Willy was not as dumb as Enrigue Soto thought. Willy did get sole possession of his 2nd check although Mr. Soto again tried to steal that check as well. Willy's friends helped him open a bank account and Willy's mother and family are now in a Bani apartment and not in their previous Bani riverside quarters, which were often flooded.

While Willy would like to recover more of the money that Enrique Soto stole from him, Mr. Soto has taken in Willy's brother into his Bani baseball training camp. Willy is afraid of repercussions against his brother, since Mr. Soto has powerful connections in Bani.

Willy Aybar in the meantime is playing 3rd base with a Class A North Carolina team and still under contract with the L.A. Dodgers.
