Despite the fact that it's an island with lots of fish in the water, about 80% of the fish sold here is sold frozen bc they don't have adequate processing plants to deal with fresh fish. I do know that Super Pola and La Sirena sell fish on ice: not frozen. You can also go the route of finding where the boats come in and if you get there early enough, you can get really good fish.

Good luck!

Has already been said.. but here goes. There are fishing villages in the DR, the locals bring in fresh fish daily.

While at the local fish market, with fish that had been brought in within the hour I saw many red fish that looked like red snapper to me.
Therefore, I believe red snapper as I know them are local to the DR.
Once I saw chillo mentioned in this thread I recognized it from a Spanish only menu I had in LT.
I "believe" that chillo is the magical Spanish word I am looking for. Will advise :)

The OP has confirmed that chillo is the word in question. All posts that follow (except post #21) do not offer suggestions on how to say red snapper in Spanish. Rumble2005 if you have a word in Spanish used in the DR to add to the thread, please send me a PM.

The thread is now closed.
