Recently found out about a ferry that goes from the DR to Puerto Rica several times a week and on Saturdays cruises the southern Dominican coastline with two bands on board and buffet style dinner. Can anyone provide me with a docking location this watercraft and how I can find out more information about rates, time schedules, etc..

You may call Ferries del Caribe (809) 688-4400. The ferry docks at the Malec?n in Santo Domingo, right were the Ozama River meets the Caribbean Sea.

I took this ferry in January, and it's not all great. You pay $120 US, one way, and an extra $60 US if you want a cabin. Trust me, you are going to want a cabin, because it is at least a 12 hour journey, which travels at 8:00 PM. If you don't have a ticket, it is best you get there at 4:00, when the office opens. Then, they make you go through immigration, and you are stuck on the boat until 8, when you leave. The drinks and meals are very expensive, and if you don't get a cabin, the only place to sleep is on the floor of reception. When you finally arrive in Mayaguez, PR (about 2 hours from San Juan), you have another 2-3 hour wait for immigration. Basically, we were stuck on this boat from 4:30 PM to 11:00 AM! We decided never to put ourselves through this again, and called American Airlines. One way, to Puerto Plata from San Juan, was $171 US, and took 45 minutes!

Trina, you traveled during the high season, that is why you paid $171.00 for your one way flight to Puerto Rico. During the regular season, 10 months of the year, you can travel in the Ferry for $129.00 round trip to P.R. For $60.00 you get a cabin that sleep 4 persons. Can you do better in D.R., P.R. or the U.S.? Drinks? A Presidente will set you back $1.50 at the Disco with a live band playing. A Bud, $1.75. But you can bring your own "refreshements", I do. Meals are Diner $8.00 and Breakfast $6.00. Long waits are normal when you travel by ship that is why they are called "Cruceros". In a hurry take a plane, for leisure travel/romance take a boat. By the way, I do not work for the Ferry nor none of my relatives. And yes, I am a frequent Ferry traveler.
