I am now ready to purchase a pistol. My question for fellow gun owner is this , what are reliable gun names here in the Dominican Republic. I am from the states and I know some very reliable, tested , names. I have visited some stores here and the only name I recognize is Taurus ( not especially impressed with there weapons ). I once saw an Israelis pistol they are known for their expertise, but it is no longer available. I keep seeing this H2000, went online, but could not find anything about them. I just want a comfortable, reliable weapon I have been a weapon owner for over 20 yrs. ( if I have to pull it out, and I hope I never have to, I want be focus on the threat, not my gun performance. I am in Santo Domingo, but will travel outside to any store ( I know the import band is still on and there is a short supply ). Thank you in advance!

IMHO, you should stick with the names that you know and are proven reliable in the US, (i.e. Sig, Glock, HK). Seach for those, hopefully you'll find 'em.

I am with you, not a big fan of Taurus.

You can get a better gamut of guns to pick from if you opt to buy from a private owner (traspaso de pistola) rather than buy one from the shops...

If it came to having to purchase one at the local stores, Glock should be the only name to go for. It owns all the strong points of a reliable and trouble-free handgun...

Keep in mind that you'll carry the gun all the time with you, weight is an issue you must account for 99% when shopping for a gun...

I was in a gun store two days ago. The Glocks are going for about 160,000rd.if you can find one. I saw a Sig for 130. Prices are INSANE. As Crazy Eddie used to say.

Ahhhh!! Can't forget Eddie Antares yet!! Sold me a 5 year Crazy Eddie's warranty on my ex-Sony TV that went south soon after but could never cash in for...

Indeed! The prices were insane... An Ode to NB Beats the Wiz as well...
Luckily we still have Radio Shack to buy the batteries and whatchamacallit thingies and have an excuse to get away from weekend chores at home...

Crazy Eddie did eight years for fraud. He got out about 9 years ago. Maybe he can open up in the DR?

I'm in the U.S.A. currently.

My daily carry piece is an Israeli Military Industries Jehrico 941. (9mm) Yes it's a boat anchor and I own two. I carry in a Fobus paddle holster which helps in the weight issue of the gun. IMI also now makes a polymer 9mm (Baby Jehrico) which I prefer over any Glock.

If you see the Tanfoglio Witness, (Italian mfg) it is the same frame and gun basically. Last one I saw here was around $499USD

AMT made a very concealable 9mm back-up on it's 45 DAO frame. I carry the .45 as a back-up (wish I could find an AMT 9mm) and in some situations the AMT .45 is all I have on me. AMT had some issues back in the day, but I've never had a problem in over 1000 rounds through it.

If you could find a Baretta 9mm in the DR, you'd be doing yourself a service to own one. They are not my pick, but they're a quality product. I know certain police are carrying them in SD. I've spoken to a few DR LEO carrying the H2000, which in the holster, appeared to be a Glock clone to me.....

Taurus...reminds me of bull---t. Seems a lot of what is in the DR gun shops is South American made product....and there's not much quality there in my opinion....if you've got deep pockets HK or a SIG is the way to go based on DR inventory.

When looking for a pistol, two years ago, I also had the idea of buying an H2000 since it has very good online reviews and looks OK.

But in the "armeria" they suggested me to buy a "Bersa Mini-Thunder" instead.
The Bersa Mini-thunder pistol is based on the famous Walther P88. It also has very good reviews and is less expensive than the H2000.
I finally purchased a Bersa, I think the cost was about $ 40 000. They have two models, one is shiny and the other black, with Tenifer coating (like the Glocks).
I have fired about 300 rounds without one malfunction, using different amunition, including hollow point bullets.
Also the Bersa resisted well the ocean salty air, at least until now.

Thank you but, where can I find a private owner or collecter, Is there a section a newspaper or a listing where people advertise sales? I might be old fashion but if I don't see the hammer I do not really know the statas of my firearm. I guess seeing ie believing for me, so I shy away from pistold like glock , although I and convinced it is a very good firearm.

Yes, you can post a wanted ad in the newspaper where you ask for the king of gun you're looking for...

Most private sales happen in three ways: Somebody that knows you that knows a third person that is willing to sell their gun. A person that has links to military people can get a privately held gun for traspaso and last but not least, a solicitation ad in the newspaper stating that you're looking to purchase a used gun for traspaso as well.

Carandai Maybe???????

now the american and european models are In the Rd $100-160 thousand Range For S&W, Sig, Glock, I even saw a Few Kimber 1911's For Rd$250,000 And up! Now that enough to buy a Car LOL.

But I See Carandai Pistols seem To be Very Popular, They even Have a Glock Wanabe Witch Looks Pretty Tempting For About 86,000. My Vote is Go For Something that You Like And Feel Comfortable With, trust me even if it runs a little steep in price. I dont know about you guys but id rather have something reliable and confortable even if it runs high in price than something big, bulky and cheap For a low price. Like ive said: a life does not have a price tag on it.
the Decision to buy a handgun means there is a real reason to buy one
if your gonna buy it make sure its worth it.

a relative of mines owns a carandai Which is Kind of the Model Seen Here->
...::: TİSAŞ - TRABZON GUN INDUSTRY CORP. A.Ş. :::...

Nice Gun, Recoil is Kinda Heavy, 15+1 Round Mag + 1 17 Round Mag Put about 80rds through it so Far Not a bad Gun.it goes for about 75,000 Last time i saw about 3 weeks ago.

I Have the Smith and wesson model Which is Chosen By local PD'S Shown Here ->Product: Model 910S Pistol
Nice,Small,15+1 rounds Smooth,Recoil is minimum very Light to Carry Which if your gonna Carry Size should be Considered.

Plus should you be absent And your wife Should need to use It On Your Property Where the Tenencia license Allows Her to Do So, Something light, small, With little Recoil Will Also Help, Hopefully she doesnt close her eyes when she shoots Like my wife Does when we go to our Finca LMAO :)
i make sure shes very Far From anything And Mountains Are All Around us.

I think my favorite side arm ( and most costly pistol ) is the Kimber Ultra Carry. I did not know the Kimber name was available in the DR. Still at that price and for just a 9mm. No way. Has anyone had any problems with the effects of the sea air with pistols that are not stainless steel? Do you have to constantly clean and coat here, in addition, since the cost of a box of 50rds is so high, what is the law on self reloading? If you want extra clips are they a banned item on imports since I problem can purchase some cheaper in the US. How about clips in luggage import?

According to my Cousin Which is FBI. It is Illegal to take bullets or magazines in Any type Of Luggage because they are Technically part of a firearm.
But my two Cents are if u hide it Well who Will Notice???
If u Take Brass And Reload them i Dont think Thats illegal But then again they might ask question when they see them on the x-ray before exiting the airport unless u put them in a bag and take the bag out upon arrival IDK. If u have the Brass And know how to reload Go for it As Many dealers Sell Reloaded boxes of fifty At the Same price of 1800 Or more For Standard Fmj Or 2200 Or More For Jhps. I pay 2200 For new Jhps But inspect Every Single Bullet In the Box Before Buying.(annoyes My Dealer LOL) But It has to be done. I i could Reload My own Brass That would be Great. All the dealers Do this.
i buy Reloaded fmjs For practice at $1600 the Box of fifty.

The 1911 Kimber djuno mentioned is a .45 caliber, which i understand is not for civilian purchase. I believe all Kimber handguns are .45 caliber (1911 style) semi-autos.

Actually Ricardo It is One of These:
Kimber Pro Carry ll 9MM
But still RD$200,000 TOOOO rich for my Blood LOL.

Personally I think the Whole Not being allowed to carry anthing bigger than 9mm Thing Is just Way Out Of proportion. Ok Fine a .45????? Who in the world Would wanna Go to a country that 90 Degrees Is Cold And wanna Carry a 45??? But How About my personal Favorite the .40??

i dont know if anyone has heard the new law pertaining to Personal Firearms Protection over there But i Belive It Says That more Than 2 Shots To anyone Within Center Mass Of the Chest is considered Homicide, Even if its A Burglar in ur House.

i suggest buying hollowpoints Right Along with ur New Gun as normal bullets will Over Penetrate and not Stop the burglar or thieve the Way u would want it to thus requiring more shots. remember what they say in the poligono 2 tiro en el pecho..si sigue 1 en la Cabeza.

You can buy Targets Here At any local Walmart for about $2.50 for a 12 pack and take it in ur maleta. Tie it to a planta De mango in the Finca And TADA Free Shooting range LOL Of Course Down deep away From Any Civilization That way its you and the Chivos LOL

Are there any major effects of the sea air with pistols that are not stainless steel? Do you have to monthly clean and oil here?

i clean about every 2 weeks When im here when im not I leave it Locked in a safe which is Moisture Proof and fireproof im leaving Friday so i will Leave it lubed. No no real Issues with it unless u use Cheap Ammo Like the Refilled Bullets from the range. No Fte's No type 1, 2, 3 type malfunctions With the premium ammo. But use a Holster So Sweat or moisture from the body as u move cant Enter The Gun in any way. sea Air Effects Will not harm your gun atleast in my Area Of Santiago (which ther're arent any seas just rivers LOL. Now Anyone Living in other Parts Might have different opinions.
but when u go to the Beach be sure to keep it holstered in one of the Full Canopy Military type holsters so no sand Will enter the Barrel.
My cousin owns a glock and has never had any damage do to Moisture or the sea air.

Nice Kimber, I didn't know they made 9mm versions. It makes sense for a reputable gun maker to have calibers to fit pistol holders with different tastes. Hey, even the MRI(desert eagle) have a 9mm.

Now, if we are talking about some real beauties, how about my favorite "Wilson Combat" http://www.wilsoncombat.com/p_tactical_elite.asp or "Nighthawk Customs" ?Nighthawk Custom - Home Page

I don't think this has been fully explained, at least to me ( and I am not that thick headed, so I'm told!). What is the reason to purchase a pistol first then ally for a license (Cart before the horse?). If you are denied a permit is the a contractual agreement the store will give all monies back ( without restocking or handle fees)? If you buy from a private owner and you have to used a lawyer for negotiations, what about those fees ( just out of luck).
