Resort with the nicest beach in Puerto Plata

My wife and I are trying to decide on a vacation in the D.R. We can't decide on whether to go to Puerto Plata or Punta Cana. We are interested in taking some interesting tours (snorkeling, mountain tours) and most importantly want a resort with a beautiful beach. Could somebody please tell me which resorts in the Puerto Plata region have the nicest beaches and what they're like. As well, what types of tours are available in the Punta Cana area? I've heard that the beaches in Punta Cana are perhaps the best in the Carribean, however, there is little to do there outside of the resorts. I've also heard that the beaches in the Puerto Plata area are not nearly as nice as Punta Cana but there are plenty of tours available. Thanks for your help.

Are you aware that you can have it all? Why not book Puerto Plata (Playa Dorada, Costa Dorada, Sosua, Cabarete, Playa Grande), Jarabacoa (mountain area) and then Punta Cana. You probably can find a tour operator that has packages to Puerto Plata and a departure by way of Punta Cana. To recommend a beautiful beach, we would need more information on what makes a beach beautiful for you. Do you want a big hotel or a small hotel? You probably could book small hotels in the North Coast and then a resort in Punta Cana. You are right when you say there are more tours available to tourists staying in the north coast.

From the responses posted -It seems Boca Chica is the best beach in the entire DR.

Boca Chica - Is the clearest, calmest, swallowest most pool like beach this side of Negril, Jamaica & Grand Cayman. I've al;ready booked my flight/stay for Nov. 17th. at the Coral Hamaca Resort & Casino with a side trip to P/Cana.

P/Cana - Is supposed to be nice and long (20miles) w/ palm trees. However, in no way is it the nicest in the Caribbean!!!!

For the BEST try either Negril, Cayman, St Johns (Trunk Bay) and Anguilla (Shoal Bay).
