Has anyone been to the Riu Bambu? We are going Feb. 28. This resort just opened beginning of Feb., read one report and it was positive. What about the shopping? Are there vendors on the beach? Do we need to bring gifts?(just read about that). Any info would be appreciated.

We just spent two weeks in Riu Naiboa in Punta Cana and also took a look to Riu Bambu and it looked very nice (at least nice poolbar...). There is Caribian street in Riu area where you can find some shops (souveniers, clothes, diving equipment, CDs etc.) The "centre of Punta Cana" is really small and shopping is nothing special there. In centre you can also find a basar area which sells almost same stuff than "basars" in the beach. If you want you can go shopping to Santo Domingo (4 hour driving and bad roads...). Some friends of us visited also in Higue and told us that it was awful place. Our first week was quite windy, but the second one (last week) was OK. I think you have made a very good choice! Enjoy your holiday!

I just got back from there on Tuesday Feb 16. In my opinion the resort is very nice but it is far from a 5 star. The resort is very pretty and well layed out. The service from the bartenders was excellent however the food was very bland, not very tasty and predictable. We got very tired of eating the same thing everday. The chambermaids only cleaned our room 3 times in the whole week and we had to call them twice. The beach is awesome and the pool area is nice. Make sure you say hi to Ramon & Fausto at the pool bar, they got us happy everyday. These two made it alot of fun and worth the trip. Overall it was a nice resort the staff was good, rooms were nice but not great, bar and restaurant staff were good. This resort is not a 5 star, but a solid 4 star, since the food needs improvement. Email me if you have any questions. Hola
