Going in 9 days, any advice on where to go outside of the complex?

Are there bars nearby you can visit? Or a market?

Thanks in advance.

Louise,
I wish to welcome you to DR1. I can't help you with your questions but one of our many members will respond to your inquiry. When you get back home from your vacation you might want to give us a bit of a report in the "Trip Report Forum" so that we my hear about your trip and how the food and service and such were.

It would all depend on how comfortable you are travelling on the North Coast or if you wanted to take a day trip which could include lots of things.

Close to the Riu complex
a few km. towards Santiago (right on the main road) is the fishing village of Maimon. Fried fish is sold at many stands and outdoor restaurants there - excellent with a Presidente bien fria and tostones.

Towards Puerto Plata (left on the main road) a few km. is Cofresi (the home of Ocean World) and here also is Chris & Mady's (Chris is a Canadian from Winnipeg and Mady is his Dominicana wife). In downtown Puerto Plata you will find Sam's Bar owned by American Joanne (Sam is her OLD basset hound and on the eastern edge of Puerto Plata id Cafe Cito owned by Canadian Tim Hall. All these places get consistently good to excellent reviews.

If you wish to go farther afield we can give you a similar list for Sosua and/or Cabarete.

Enjoy and please do get out of the resort.

hi, myself and my girlfriend are staying at the rui resort (mambo) in bahia maimon for the first two weeks of july. very excited!

one of my friends happens to be in the dominican republic at the same time, staying at a resort in playa dorada. we'd like to meet up for a few beers, perhaps over the world cup, just wondering what the easiest way to do this would be? how easy is it to get from the rui resorts to playa dorado?

also, is the rui mambo itself likely to be showing the world cup?

many thanks!

Not sure about the Mambo, but the Bachata probably will as the other part of my group watched the European Cup Final there.

We liked it, probably spent more time at the Bachata during the day because the pool area was a bit livelier than the others, and they had a swim up bar!

The food was good, and I can be quite a picky eater! Loved the fact there were bottles of spirits in the rooms, and the rooms themselves were really nice, air conditioning was fantastic.

The only time I ventured out was to go to Ocean World, did the Dolphin Swim there which was a real experience, definitely not to be missed!
