Can anyone give me some information on rock climbing in the Dominican Republic? I've heard that there is a park in Santo Domingo where people climb, but are there any climbing excursions? My friend who I will be with doesn't climb and I will need someone to belay me.....

Both the Gold's Gym (just off Churchhill in the Daisy Gran Salon Bldg.) and The Body Shop have a Rock Climbing Wall. At Golds Gym you can buy a day pass ($RD270) to visit and use the wall as they have guides during the times that the wall is active. Any of these guides can help you with Private Lessons or tips on excursions.

Enjoy!

At Park Mirador Sur there are a few spots for rock climbing, but I think they don't use ropes: there is sand underneath and it isn't a very high climb, but I have heard it is great practice. I am not exactly sure where it is, but I think next to the 3km or 4km sign. If you just walk the whole 5km one day you should be able to see it on the left hand side! Good luck!

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the advice! I'd love to go for a climb while I'm down there. I've heard there's awesome climbing in Samana as well....at Playa El Fronton I think....but again the lack of a partner to belay is a problem. Park Mirador Sur would be great cause I can do some bouldering solo:)

Well, I learned how to belay at Vertical World in WA, USA... I think my certificate is still around there somewhere in my wallet. Samana is a a few hours from Sto Dgo, so it all depends on when you're planning to go, but I'd love to rock climb myself too!

I don't have any gear though :ermm:

This area is spectacular, but not for the novice. There are no facilities here or near-by. You are are your own. Dont know much about climbing, but it would appear to be "EXPERT" level...Good luck.;)

That's awesome! I've been to Vertical World too! Have you also climbed at REI in Seattle? I did it in October, and it was amazing! I'd love to meet up and go for a climb! I obviously won't have any gear myself other than my shoes and harness, so maybe we should stick to climbing in SD. If I was to leave my harness and shoes at home to make a little extra room in my suitcase would I be able to rent them somewhere down there? I don't know when I'll be heading to SD yet....I'll be staying in POP, but am planning on doing a trip there at some point during my stay. So are you from Seattle?

Thanks for the advice! As much as I would love to go for a climb there as I love a challenge and think that climbing right on the beach would be amazing, I think I'll skip it. The lack of gear, partner, and the long bus ride from POP are unfortunately 3 big strikes against it:(

I went to REI in Seattle with a friend and saw the climbing wall and column they have, but I didn't try it :( I am glad you enjoyed it! I once climbed the structure that the ROTC ppl put up, and that was cool.

I'd be up for a climb too! I cycle at Mirador Sur everyday in the mornings, so that is great for me.

I obviously won't have any gear myself other than my shoes and harness, so maybe we should stick to climbing in SD. If I was to leave my harness and shoes at home to make a little extra room in my suitcase would I be able to rent them somewhere down there?

I can find out for you at a sport shop nearby, or at the Gold's Gym, to see if they rent equipment out. I'll have to get back to you with that!

I don't know when I'll be heading to SD yet....I'll be staying in POP, but am planning on doing a trip there at some point during my stay. So are you from Seattle?

I live in Santo Domingo, so anytime you are coming, let me know! I am from Sto Dgo but I lived in Port Orchard and then Bremerton for around a year. I wanted to study at UW, but the scholarship never came through, and it was too expensive for me. My ex-gf is from there, so that might have had something to do at the time :cheeky:

Q: Are you staying at an all-inclusive in POP?

Yes I am staying at an AI:) Thanks for checking into the gear for me, I really appreciate it! I love Seattle....I'm not really a huge fan of big cities but I love that one! I'll let you know when I figure out when I'll be coming down....I'd imagine it would be not this week but the following one...

Oh, personally I think AI will be the doom of my country. I think they're horrible and they exploit my land without actually bringing in useful capital BUT... that has nothing to do with you, or does it make me judge any guest whatsoever. It provides you with many benefits which I can't deny, lower cost being one of them :(

I went to the local Gold's Gym. They loan you equipment to use within the facility, but not outside. None of the athletic wear and accessory/equipment stores have a rental program... and they couldn't direct me anywhere. Talk about hitting dead ends.

I am sure you would find local rental shops near Playa Fronton, but I have not seen them in Sto Dgo.

Your best bet is to pack your gear! It isn't too heavy, right? Shoes/harness, chalkbag... You could buy a rope here.

Sorry I couldn't get a positive answer on that!! I would still love to try freeclimbing with someone at Mirador Sur, so let me know!

Great! On this website they list a couple of places within Sto Dgo. They also detail where to find the bouldering zones at Mirador Sur! They even have an official day when they all get together. I'll check it out ;)

Good find!

I'm an american living in SD until mid april or so, right around Kennedy and Lincoln - have my own harness and shoes, would willing to belay if needed - I used to climb at Mission Cliffs in San Francisco, CA. I used to do all indoors, up to about a 5.11c, but now, have gotten out of shape and wouldn't really be too good at any more than maybe a 5.10b or so. But would be willing to partner, spend a day or two climbing, granting you belay back for me :)

Let me know.

Hey, I don't know if you were saying that to her or to me, but I would love to! I don't really know what my level is.

Do you know any places to climb around Sto Dgo? Seems like Mirador Sur is mainly bouldering.

I'd belay back, no prob!

The only place to rock climb (natural) in the city of Santo Domingo is South Mirador Park, but if you are reffereing to Dominican Republic you can go to "Conde de Mana" in the city of San Crist?bal and "Fronton beach" in Saman? city. This two are the best climbing places of the country, routes goes from 30 to 150 feets and most are well bolted.

Of course the best way to acces this climbing areas is by contacting one of the members of the Dominican Climbing and Mountaneering Asoc. (ADEM), web site is ademrd : ADEM Asociaci?n Dominicana de Escalada. Theres a group trip you can join in Holly Week to Saman? (march 20-23).

If you want, you can also contact me in order to reffer you to the group, wich joins every sarurday after 4pm in stair No.3 and sundays in stair No.10, at South Mirador Park. I can not offer belaying because for the moment I have a broken ankle (blame bouldering).
