What are some recipes for rum cocktals. Is rum the preferred drink over tequila?

Yes, definitely rum! Not a lot of people drink tequilla in the DR! Tequilla is a Mexican drink.

Lots of people drink rum with just ice, and many mix it with refresco - soft drink, such as Pepsi or 7 UP. The "best" is Extra Viejo rum, but "Anejo" has teh best taste when mixed with soft drinks.

Rum & Coke is called Cuba Libre.
Pina Colada with alcohol also includes rum.

There are also other rum cocktails, but you usually get them at resorts or high end bars. The regular dominican rum fare is rum + ice + soda.

Santho libre!!!!

my personal favorite would be rum & esprite (sprite); santho libre. but this drink does not translate with other rums. ie. you MUST use dominican rum (or possibly some other dark, carribean rum made with tons of sugar), trust me, I've tried to replicate this in the states and it just doesn't work.

when i was in PC i had a banana mama or 3 for breakfast everyday,its kind of a slushy drink with fruit and should be ordered with "mucho rum.lol

Good rum and orange juice is an excellent cocktail.
Something fun is to soak pineapple in 151 proof rum and add the bits to fruit punch. Watch out!!
