not bad.

Samana's new airport at El Catey, which has been open for just four months, registered 16,133 arrivals.

Well I guess alot of people are coming to the Dominican Republic and that is good I could imagine that the number is going to be much more greater when US carriers start flying from the US to the destination.

Jasper,

You must be referring to 16,133 people not arriving flights...correct?

Could anyone tell me what US-based airlines serve the Samana airport? I have not been able to locate the airport code (AZS?) in any of the travel search engines.

Help appreciated!

Tika - At this time there are no US airlines that go to AZS. So far I think it is just charter flights from Canada and Europe that are flying there. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Only LTU and Condor are flying from Europe now 2 times a week

Actually Neo Spa is flying now from Italy each Wednesday also, and Excel flies every Tuesday from Paris on Thursday, AirPlus flies every Wednesday from Madrid and Air Italy is flying each Thursday. First Choice begins Gatwick service on Thursdays in May, Blue Panorama begins May service on Sundays on Thursdays from Italy and, while not Europe, AA Eagle begins flying from San Juan in June is the plan. Continental and Delta are looking at flights beginning November and December respectively but not yet confirmed to Samana (AZS).
And Aviastar, you might try translating schedules for non-airline folks instead of quoting from a res system that isn't always decipherable to a lot of folks. Just a suggestion.

Follow-up question...

With the build up of tourism in Samana, do you think that there is a chance for US-based flights to start up in the next 9 months? I am trying to plan a wedding in Samana with a lot of US visitors. Where is the next closest airport? Thanks...

Plan on using Puerto Plata airport (POP) and hope to use Samana, El Catey (AZS). It's about a 4 hour bus ride (mas o menos).

FYI North American flights are on the wane starting about now and won't pick up until possibly December (+ or -). Almost all flights now originate in Europe.

Even if you take the optimistic sounding first post in this thread...

16,133 arrivals in 4 months is only about 135 passengers per day which is less than one full airplane arrival (depending on actual airplane capacity) per day for the inaugural first quarter - hardly stellar.

Just one man's ramblings.

Santo Domingo.- American Airlines said today that it has requested from the Dominican Civil Aviation Board the respective permits to operate new routes in the Caribbean area, from the international airports Las Americas and El Catey, in Saman?.
...

The permit request corresponds to the new routes San Juan, Puerto Rico-Saman?; Santo Domingo-Port Prince; Santo Domingo-Cura?ao and Santo Domingo-Caracas.
Del Pozo said the new routes, to be operated by American Eagle, are part of the airline?s expansion plans and clearly show its confidence in the country?s stability and in its present and future potential, as part of the possibilities which the DR-CAFTA trade deal with the United States and Central America offers.
He said the new flight frequencies will add some 150,000 passengers to Dominican Republic in the first year of operation, adding that if approved, American Airlines plans to start those operations next July 1.

Flights to AZS

American Eagle has one flight a day from San Juan since late December 2007 now flying on th,sa,su,mo only depart San juan around 1300 depart AZS around 1430, cost $700 approx return, $450 single. saves a 4 hour drive from Santiago or 5 hours from Puerto plata, dont even think of going via SD.

I have used the service 6 times since December, great views of samana and the headland on the way in and out if the flight path isnt directly over Samana
by car El Catey ( Samana) is 45 minutes from Samana, and the roads at the moment are in absolute chaos due to the pipe line being laid and the general non road work which the DR is famous for.

Could anyone tell me what US-based airlines serve the Samana airport? I have not been able to locate the airport code (AZS?) in any of the travel search engines.
