Good Morning, I have lived in Santiago for 10 years but I have to go to Santo Domingo about 5 times a year for errands. Please suggest a moderately priced (about $60-$70) a night small hotel in/near the Zona Colonial? I have stayed at every type of place from Hotel Santo Domingo, Pena Alba, Discovery,Mercure etc without finding the right combination of owner run, having a balcony for cigar smoking to early morning coffee/restaraunt available?

I highly recommend using hotwire. On 2 occasions, I got a room at Nicolas ovando for $70, almost half the usual price. Or, staying at an apartment if it's more than 1 night, though some will rent for 1 night. I'm sure you know that you need to add 28% for hotel tax and about the same for apartments for bullsh!t fees.

I'll have to check some old receipts, it's "Mansione" something, side street just east of Jaragua Nice, small rooms, quiet, rooftop tables

Santo domingo hotel, thats it, all you need, also one by the university..if you need a taxi, hit up ramon at 829-353-3446 friend of mine since 2007, tell him anthony referred you..he actually works for serina, can always find him there or others, all safe is the point and now you have peace of mind..

If your taking the bus, do not take the metro back unless you have a 500 pound gorilla furcoat i have no idea why they do this except to control sickness or to get you sick....but they freeze us out every damn time!! Carrbre tours never a problem...

Your mean Maison Gautreaux. Was there during carnaval last March. Very nice house and good staff. Take the room upstairs with door to the large terraza. Peaceful although 30 sec to walk to the malecon. Maybe 10 min to walk to the El Conde. If you need it: also guest friendly with no extra charge (Av. Pasteur is the next street ;-).

Good Morning, I agree with Matilda that Casa Sanchez is an excellent place to stay with real personal service. The breakfast is a big European style with various breads, meats, cheeses, eggs, fresh fruit plate great coffee. Jonathan is always around to make sure you get what you want.

Hotel El Conde de Penabla directly across from the oldest church in the new world. Ask for a room with a balcony. They have a great cafe right outside their door. The restaurant opens early and stays open fairly late. Google their website.

Does anyone here know the name of the place that's a block or two west of Maximo Gomez near Independence Ave? I'm not sure if it's still there, but the last time I checked, it was very economical.

I can't remember the name for the life of me.

Uh... I think you will need to get more specific then that. There are a lot of hotels in the area.

The good folks here on DR1 pointed me to the Riazor hotel on Independencia.

Great value but no cigar balcony that I noticed.
