Sea Horse Ranch
Can anybody assist me on this subject?....I looked at it via webpages etc....but cannot find a human reference other than the company line the reps give me.(i've been to DR once....15 years ago...nice...but in a resort hotel!).

I'm thinking of staying at a private spot...this is a gated/ private "ranch" with villas to rent..comes with tennis, horses, the beach. Any insight would be appreciated regarding the quality of facilities, the food, the service, the beaches, etc... and naturally in relation to the price.

It is situated between Sosua and Cabarete. Upscale and supposedly very nice. I know someone that has a home there but haven't been in the Complex. It is pretty pricey by DR standards and cheap by US standards.

Sea Horse Ranch is the luxury suburb of Sosua. It is an area of large, very expensive private homes. People who live there are very well off financially; have to be in order to pay the prices. There is a very small restaurant overlooking the sea; very good food. And yes, there are tennis courts, horses, and a swimming pool Haven't looked at the beach, so can't comment on it. Also, don't know what services are provided renters, but would think it would be good quality.

Regarding price, it will be expensive in relation to the cost of a hotel room in a resort.

Appparently it has everything one might need except for Dominicans and Dominican culture...rent a condo from Eddy in Sosua and see the country not the country club.

WOW THAT WAS UNFAIR!

This place offers a lot to people that may "ALSO" want to see the countryside and meet the people. Man how can you compare Condos Dominicanos with a place like this? Do you think they attract the same crowd or do you want everyone to look at the DR through the same rose colored glasses that you do?

There are some people that just want a romantic week with someone special and to just rest and relax without mingling. Is that ok with you or must they all meet the masses on every vacation?

Sea Horse even though offers a maid and a cook also offers a driver and a car to those that stay there I believe. I haven't checked out their website in a while but I believe that was the case a few years ago.

You're right Jazz...

Just letting my personal prejudices out...I always believed in going to a country to learn about the country...I feel about gated communities the way I feel about AIs. You might meet a few Dominicans there but they are usually either workers or rich folk out to live like Americans...these communities are not developed for your average middle to lower upper middle class Dominican. They are developed for rich expats and normally that is what you will find.

He/she seemed in the original post to be saying and its my interpretation: Hey, I did the resort thing 15 years ago...now I want to stay more in a way I can get to know the people. I may be wrong in my interpretation and if I am and he/she just wants to stay in a luxury area and relax, so be it. But, if I am right, it seems to me he/she would be better off in an area other than the gated communities.

So, maybe I was being unfair...I leave it up to him or her.

Sea Horse Ranch is not walled like a prison and the people who live there are not recluses. Someone staying/living there is able to participate in all the activities of Sosua and Cabarete that they wish to. Everyone needs a place to stay. If they can afford it, Sea Horse Ranch is as good as any other.

The reason you can't get much info on the place is that there is a wide range of different homes in different price ranges. Be assured, most go from the top end on up. It is an upper-crust neighborhood of private homes. Many live there permanently, and many of the private homes are available for rent.

I've always said the same thing about AI's. Nobody is imprisoned and you have everything available that non-AI's offer, plus the convenience of "everything" right there should you want it. You can mingle, or not. AI's don't eliminate options. They add them.

Well I hate to tell you this but... Condos Dominicanos is GATED and has a NIGHT WATCHMAN with a shotgun and I bet that is not to keep out the RICH EXPATS:) I have stayed there often. All I have met there are people from Other places and not Dominicans except for the maids and one person that I remember that was a Dominican owner. Hell I met maxxjaxx there and that was a bad enough experience in itself!:)

I read it a little differently. I read it as "I stayed at a resort and would like more of a home with privacy". I think my take is closer to reality than yours is:)

Just send a pair of YOUR rose colored glasses to the Sea Horse Ranch:)

I agree Ken, Sea Horse is beautiful and definitely upscale. Bill Kirkman who was and possibly still is the honorary American Consul in the area is the developer. Some homes are fairly modest however most are quite palatial. Financing by the developer for those wanting to buy is not an option. Heck why not, if someone has that kind of money they shouldn't be criticized for buying there. As far as gated goes, Casa Marina and most other hotels or resorts have armed guards and gates.

I agree with you Jim, and in actual fact Sea Horse should not even be compared to an AI. At Sea Horse guests and owners still use theservices of maids, gardners, cooks and other staff so they are still helping the local economy. I'd venture to say that most people at Sea Horse leave Sea Horse on a daily basis and still use the beach at Cabarete or Sosua.

AI's are the only way most people can find a really nice place to stay. The small non-AI luxury hotels don't do a whole lot of advertising. They don't need to. They are small and fill up quickly.

I know my first stay in the DR was in an AI, and it had nothing to do with AI. I just wanted to stay at the nicest hotel in town. I did get out of the complex. We arrived at 1am and I was in town by 2am. The hotel bars were, as they told me, "finished" and we wanted some drinks.

all inclusive staff not Dominican?

I missed something in that "Sea Horse guests and owners use maids and staff that are local." I wasn't aware that all inclusives import housekeeping labor from some other country.

You didn't miss anything, arturo. Their housekeeping, etc., staf is local. AI's can't afford to use any but local help.
