I know some people who gor screwed by Western Union. Be very careful and check all extra fees that they 'add' on. What you check off to send in the US will NOT be the same ammount they receive in the DR! BE VERY CAREFUL!

When I use Western Union, I make sure the agent writes down the peso amount being transfered and the exchange rate being used on my receipt. That keeps them honest. I have not had trouble sending money to Barahona in this manner.

Western Union is a convenient way. It is also one of the most expensive. If this is a one-time shot, Western Union is fine but the fees are pretty steep. Western Union can also be very convenient, as you can send money via WU with a phone call or via the web, and a credit card (www.westernunion.com/english/).

If the recipient owns a Mastercard, Visa, or American Express, you can send them money for free via a credit to their credit card using paypal (www.paypal.com).

Someone here on the board suggested a good way for repeat sends. Open a bank account in your name in your country, have a money card (ATM card) issued, and send the money card to the DR (or deliver it personally). Once they have the card, they can withdraw from any ATM machine. You control the funds available for withdrawel by your deposits.

Hi Jim!

Just wanted to thank you for passing along the ATM card idea. From the US to the DR, WU does charge $6 per transfer, plus 6% of the amount you're sending. It works out to $12 per $100. Over time, I could save quite a bit. Thank you! Have a good day.

My bank said that the banking card is very dangerous. It seems that people have devised ways to scam people this way too. They can do an electic transfer from another account and then reverse it, leaving you responsible for a negative account.

My bank was very against this way of sending money!

I have sent it by wu and never have had a problem, I also did the ATM card, however make sure that you trust whom ever it is very well b/c this way can get out of hand also and you still have your service charges not as much as wu however over time they may add up to that so be very careful of which ever method you use

Well by now most of the women have found the best way to send money to that special person whos mother (sister, child, grandmother etc) needs medicine or an operation or that they (the special person) will need for a crash English coarse or to study to be a doctor or to purchase a new motorbike so they can go to school, work, be a motoconcho ( or just picking up more tourists so THEY can meet a special someone that they can soon ask for money for their mother (sister, child etc, etc) (of coarse in many cases it will only be a short term loan--right) With luck they can have half a dozen (maybe more) doing the same thing. (Gee don't all come back the same week for a visit)

DONT WORRY WOMEN, JUST AS MANY MEN DO THE EXACT SAME THING. We see it day in and day out. (lust makes it happen)

I personally don't appreciate the assumptions made on this message board from time to time.

For example, there is a myriad of reasons why a person would want to send money - anywhere.

Perhaps I should refrain from disseminating information in the future, lest I be presumed guilty of whatever your imagination creates.

Sorry Sarah, Mostly these type of comments are tongue in cheek and for a little chuckle as many of us have been there, done that, seen that and so on so we carry on with what we think are inside jokes that appear to be at your expense. Note however that for those that live here in the DR we actually do hear and see these things happening almost every day, day in and day out BECAUSE many of us live in tourist areas and see a much higher & constant level of this than one would see elsewhere in the country. We watch plane loads of tourists unload, watch them for 1 to 2 weeks, listen to them in bars, restaurants, on the beach, translate for this girl, or that boy..usually reluctantly, and watch the cons at work every week or so with their latest. A high incidence of the unscrupulous, cons & theives IN ANY COUNTRY always go to where the money &/or the naive are located. (Naive to the local ways of whatever country as compared to the visitors country) Since the DR is our little world that's what we discuss and joke about...it is a common thread. But Sarah, please don't stop contributing. We need serious themes as well as light ones.

OK then, I won't take things so personally from here on out. Thanks for the explanation. It's really too bad that both sides allow this to happen. I'm sure you've all heard, "Give a man a fish, and he'll eat for a day; but teach a man to fish, and he'll eat for a lifetime". The lesson being to give by teaching. Just a thought. Have a good day.
