A friend of mine in Piscataway, NJ, is returning to his home in the Dominican Republic this December. Can anyone recommend a shipping company for sending personal effects (furniture, clothing), along with an automobile, back to the Dominican Republic.

Here's ome I have used

Fritz and Co. In Santo Domingo their number is 518 1755 (area 809).
they have offices( I think!) in Newark, NJ (and for sure in NYC) and can ship from Port Newark. They will pick the stuff up and deliver it here.

this is a very solid company.

If you use Fritz & Co. one of the best, tell them you want to ship on a Sealnd/Maersk vessel. They go directly to Santo Domingo
on a weekly schedule and also the largest and most reliable steamship line.

Re: Once it gets there.....?

On making a move to the DR, once it gets do you have to pay duty for your furniture and personal belongings?? How much? How do they determine the value of your used personal belonging. In Costa Rica they allow expats to move there duty free on a one time basis. One time I talked to a furniture store owner and he told me that it didn`t pay to bring furniture from the USA to the DR because when customs get thru with you its not worth it. Needless to say the furniture store had very low quality furniture. Does anybody know if there is a good selection of good quality American furniture that can be purchased there? If so, how much of a mark up?

The cheapest company/way I know is TROPICAL. They go twice (or more now) a week from Miami/Fl. to Perto Plata.

There are excellent furniture stores here

You can buy "Made in USA" furniture all over the place, but the question is why?
You can get excellent Rattan, Mahogany or Pine furniture made to order for you!
Your questioning of why bring furniture is valid, IMO, but at times people are attached to things.
I would bring the best mattresses available, however, as most of the good ones here are very expensive.

Re: Once it gets there.....?How about....

leaving all your bulky stuff in a warehouse/container just in case?after the honey moon phase is over some people maybe become frustrated and leave to where they came from and then have a lot at hand.if they stay forever there is still the possibility of making a vacation and selling it off.
and if they stayed long enough it may become antique and sees a lot of $$$$?!!
