ships to Dominican Republic

I've have been to DR a least 15 times about ten years ago .I was told by someone that there are ships or ferries from Puerto Rico to Dominican Republic.Does anyone have any info about this
fares $, cities they depart from,and has anyone ever heard of any ships that depart from Miami Fl to DR.My main objective is to get my friend there who has an extreme fear of flying.He has wanted to travel to DR by boat for years but unable to find any info, except for cruise ships that only stop for one day,for a few hours. Chartering a boat is way too expensive! He is even willing to travel on a cargo ship if possible(as a package!LOL)
We live in the New york city,New Jersey metro area.
Please help with any info you can!! Thanks

Sort of I do not understand your request - you are asking of ships so you or your friend does not have to fly? But how do you get to Puerto Rico - swimming?

Of course your friend can ask the Miami port authorities how to book on a commercial ship to Santo Domingo, I believe there are a few every week, but looking at all the hassle you might consider flying as the shorter, safer way (especially today with all the security checks!)

After all the accidents and atacks occured we should not get histeric, or we would leave our cars at home (around sixtythousand car death yearly in the USA?)
