Thanks for the info but what i need to know is,for example: when Im on the north coast somewere or in the capital or boca chica there are many small inexpensive hotels everywere and i've never needed reservations to check in to one. Will I find the same thing if I go east to bayahibe, la romana, punta cana or bavaro? Or am i gonna get stuck paying $100 pp. to get a bed & hot shower?

Hear Bayahibe has a few low cost hotels, La Romana has the Olimpo which should be less than US$50. Punta Cana/Bavaro should have quite a few around the US$50 range. Check out the http://www.dominicanresorts.com offer for US$40 at Casa del Mar in Bayahibe.

I can't tell you much about the other areas, but we are a small hotel on the Northcoast, Puerto Plata-actually the first hotel in the city so the building dates to the late 1890's. No hot water but always water and power. Our rates are 150 pesos per night if you share a bath, 200 per night if you have a private bath. There are others in Puerto Plata as well, B&B's, hotels with air conditioning and cable television and hot water. rates vary from 350 pesos per night to 6 or 7 hundred - depending on your luxury requirements. My husband and I travelled to Samana and found a very acceptable double room, hot water and cable television for $200 pesos per night. We have a friend in SantoDomingo who has rooms for about the same rate. We see many independent travellers who do find their way around the country just as it sounds that you would like to do. Most larger towns have a "Gringo" meeting place which is usually a good source of information and assistance.
