Small Towns - suggestions?

I am planning a trip to the DR later in the winter season. Probably flying in to POP and starting out on the north coast. I would appreciate suggestions of good small towns or country areas or remote beaches to explore. I have visited the north coast Luperon to Samana, have been over the Cordillera Septentrional on the major routes and have been as far south as Constanza. I like to avoid mass tourism, do not mind simple hotels and local food.

Punta Ruc?a comes to mind...

And of course Mao, where you can swim in the river or go to Agua Azul and play in the huge pool.
then you have Monte Cristi and its beaches.. You might get adventerous and explore the beaches at Buen Hombre.

there are accomodations at Punta Ruc?a, by the way...

Jarabacoa is certainly beautiful, and if you do go to Monte Cristi, go on down to Dajabon and cross over to hait? for a few hours. then go back east to Santiago Rodriguez. there is a waterfall not too far away that was really magnificient. haven't been there in recent years...

From there you can go up to Monci?n and then over to San Jose de las Matas....and then down into Santiago!

neat, huh?

Where is the waterfall? Are you by any chance referring to Jicome Falls - pretty far from Santiago Rodriguez.

Also, the river in Mao (as opposed to the Mao River, a branch of the Yaqui) is extremely dirty.

Try Jamao del Norte, great swimming on the Rio Yasica. It's on the road from Cabarete and Gaspar Hernandez to Moca. Have fun!

It was so long ago that I don't remember the name

However, it was about a 45 minute ride from Stgo Rodriguez in jeeps..
As for the Mao being dirty? Maybe now that the Monci?n Dam is operating it should clean up. It used to be crystal clear...we even used to swim in the canals that came off it!!
