Small Towns/Villages in DR

We're wanting to find a place in a village to stay for an undetermined amount of time (months, possibly years) near or on the beach in the DR. Currently we're researching on the internet and would love suggestions. We don't want a big city, and we don't want a little slice of America. We are Americans, but we're currently living in Italy.

Our requirements are pretty simple: friendly people, an apartment/small house/shack of some sort avaiable, occasional electicity, running water, small store near by, (I don't mean a chain store, either, but I won't rule the place out if it doesn't have too many), and our house must be pink (that was just a joke.)

Any input at all would be fantastic.

Thanks a lot.

All right, your answer is the village of Luperon, in the province of Puerto Plata... For your pink house, no problem, we have plenty of those...

Re: martin-do you have houses for rent?

Come to Las Galeras, it is exactly what you are looking for.
Ask Ed and Mame.

Re: Small Towns - Luperon

Martin, do you live in Luperon? I haven't been able to find much information on Luperon, which is probably a good sign. Could you tell me more about it? (e.g. approx. population, size, Carlos owns the grocery store...) Again, thanks a lot.

Re:Small Town - Las Galeras

Hi, Nicole, can I assume you, Ed and Mame all live in Las Galeras? The same with Luperon, I'm having trouble finding info on Las Galeras. Do any of you have any pictures? What about population or any other info you think might be useful?

Thanks again.

Andy, Let's keep this a secret!

If you continue telling people to move to Las Galeras I am afraid it will be crowded pretty soon and loose it's charm. For heaven sake keep it zipped up. That is where I want to build my retirment home, You know? I am coming to see you very soon. The wife is expecting again and she needs a break.

See you soon. Tell Nicole I said hello and tell her to start aging my meat. We are coming! Don't forget to kiss Tom and Jerry for me.

TO D.D. : Re: Andy, Let's keep this a secret!

Hi D.D.! Yes, we've thought about keeping it a secret, too - for the same reasons as you, I guess. But, honestly, it's just such a perfect spot in the world, it's pretty hard NOT to tell people about it!!!! (Our home, currently, is in the n.w. panhandle of Florida.) After spending this past June and July in Las Galeras, we're planning on spending the winter there - and we're not rich people!!!! Then we may sell our home here and move to DR permanently (if we don't die first!) Here's the website for Las Galeras:

http://samana.net/lg-guide1.htm (be sure enter it correctly!)
And, yes, Andy was right to say "ask Ed and Mame" !!!

Re: Small Towns - Luperon/Martin

Berni, Mariana should know 4 or 5 small rooms, apartments and houses. No Air Cond, but very nice (some new) for 150 to 200 USD equivalent. I?ll send Email address to your address.

She also knows of 3 or 4 brand new upscale apartments (air ?pool) due to be ready in October for 500, maybe less if pool not ready.

Work may be a real problem

Good luck

Re: Small Towns - Luperon/Martin

Most of the expats who live in Luperon are sailors living aboard their boats. Luperon is home to the Luperon Beach Resort (an AI hotel) and also a handful of small guest houses and hotels. Asides from the bay, there isn't too much to see or do in Luperon - just the way I like it.

About Luperon...

Well, guys, they are plenty of small appartments for rent and some guest-houses, like "La Casa del Sol", Luperon is a nice place for people who like to be off the beaten tracks, but then there's almost no hope to get a job there, so you better show up with some savings, or a plan to work somewhere else... About the new hotel they are finishing to build, it's called "Bahia Luperon"... I am not so sure it's gonna be an employee's dream, but who knows ? The best thing is to get down here for a couple of weeks first, and see how you like the place, and then decide... Most of the people would rather be in a "mainstream" tourist area like Sosua. Las Terrenas, or Boca Chica... It's only a handfull of crazy eccentric foreigners who settled down in Luperon... And the sailors community, which is pretty big as well...

Re: About Luperon...

Hey Martin,
I do like Luperon...I've been there 3 times this year. But I know, a job will be difficult. I probably will have to find something in POP, but I do not like the long drive every day, but hey...what can I do ???

Do you know a Canadian by the name of Sheldon. He was living aboard a small cat registered in Miami. If so, please let me know and I'll post me email address. I think he might have headed back to Canada.

Re: About Luperon...

Hi, I was wondering why you are moving to Luperon? Do you have a loved one over there? If so, who is your loved one? My boyfriend lives over there. You probably will have a hard time finding a job in Luperon since it is such a small town. But who knows, maybe you might get lucky and find one. Good Luck!

Re: About Luperon.../Kathy

Hi Kathy,
Yes, I have a boyfriend in Luperon....and I'm going over for 3 months. But it is impossible to find a job over there, very sad. That means I have to find a job in Pop and travel every day 1,5 hour.......not very attractive. So I don't know yet what I'm gonna do about that...and you ????

To Berni about Luperon.

I will be returning to Luperon in December. How did you meet your boyfriend? Does he work at the resort there, and if so who is he if you don't mind my asking. I met my boyrfriend at the resort there a year and a half ago. I hope you can find a job in Luperon since it will be a pain to commute the distance everyday, but it will be worth it.
Thanks
