I'VE READ IN A PREVIOUS POST THAT YOU CAN FIND SNOW UP IN THE DOMINICAN MOUNTAINS (?) I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT IT GETS COLD IN THE MOUNTAINS AROUND CONSTANZA, AND THEY HAVE EVEN REGISTERED TEMPERATURES BELOW 0 DEGREES CELCIUS (32 F) AROUND THE TOWN OF CONSTANZA, BUT I DIDNT KNOW ABOUT SNOW IN THE MOUNTAINS.
CAN ANYONE COMFIRM THIS?

I GUESS IT WOULD BE COOL TO BE ABLE TO GO SKIING UP THOSE MOUNTAINS, BUT KNOWING THAT IT IS WARM DOWNSLOPE TO GO TO THE BEACH!!!

i heard of snow on Pico Duarte when I lived there in the sixties. I saw it show on Blue Mountain Peak in Jamaica and it is not as high as Duarte.

BTW, in case you're new, typing in CAPS is considered yelling and is not polite. It took me a while to find that out.

Re: SNOW IN DR/in your wild dreams

Snow in DR? Not in your wildest dreams. Ice caps can be formed in the Cordillera Central highest peaks like Duarte, La Pelona,Mt. La Rusilla and Alto de Bandera Peak near Constanza where temperature can go as low as 32 degrees. But snow has never been recorded. It would even be hard to support man made snow even in winter. Giant hale happens quite a bit.

skiing in D.R.

If you show up with snow skis in the D.R. they will take you straight to the looney bin with herbal cancer cure salesmen and their virginal brides.

P.S. dont try to ski in Ohio either. Low altitude, not cold enough.

Re: skiing in OHIO

Hey don't just discriminate against Ohio. I can tell you that anybody who skis in Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and for that matter most eastern states is waisting his time. It means skiing in icy slopes with man made snow and short trails. Some of these slopes even have ice and uncovered grass. About the best slopes are in upstate New York at Hunter Mountain. You might as well take up your skis and go to Pico Duarte.

Re: skiing in OHIO

The best skiing even better than Vail is in Canada in the rockies. In Whistler and Sunshine.

Re: skiing in OHIO

Yeah, but Canada won't let me bring my .44 Super Redhawk (2x leupold scope for those that care) to fend off the grizzlies and Zolcuatas!

In Colorado we'll probably issue you a conceal and carry permit!

Re: skiing in OHIO

Hell that thing has a 10"barrel. Concealment is not an option! In Ohio we only have black bears and they are scared of you. The Zolcuatas only come out when its hot. I would like to get out there and check you guys out though.

Took a jabal? last year with a .357. It was charging me and was gonna fix me up good. I finally dropped him 10 yards from me. The guide said it sounded like someone started a war! The meat was smelly so I gave it away. People thought I was being nice.

Re: Snow Skiing

OK, I know about this. Hunter Mtn. is in southern NY state, it's pretty good, but crowded & sometimes Icy. Windham, NY is nearby & less crowded.

Great Eastern skiing is found in VT, NH & Maine. The East Coast of the US has good skiing from as far south as North Carolina through Virginia, West VA, PA & NJ. Some places have a more limited season. My first experience was in Paoli, Southern Indiana, outside French Lick (onetime Gambling Mecca).

My preference is Utah, Wasatch Range, Salt Lake City. The best!

If you want Snow skiing and (long) driving access to warmth, go to CA, NM or AZ.

The DR has got to be the last place to think of Snow Skiing. Try water skiing, boogie boarding or Cat sailing! Or contact the Jamaican Bob Sled team for advice!

Zolcuatas?

What ia a Zolcuatas? And where exactly did you shoot this Jabali(Javalina)? Not in the DR I am sure of that!
BTW I hunt with a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 Long Colt and .44 mag. My personal Side-arm is a .45 ACP Govt. Model. No wussy wop 9mm for me!!!!!

Re: Zolcuatas & Jabal?

Zolcuatas are also known as copperheads. Poisonous pit vipers. We got a lot of them suckers in Ohio, along with some Timber and Massasauga Rattlesnakes. Some young kid just got bitten by a copperhead in Southern Ohio and they had to helicopter him to Columbus. He reached under his bed to get his shoes and BAM! Got tagged. Last I heard he was doing really poorly. I don't know if he died or not. We've got snakes all over the place out here...used to catch them when we were kids and scare our moms. At least we don't have coral snakes and gila monsters.

The Blackhawk is nice. A VERY strong frame. I like the double action and stainless steel of the redhawk. Single is more accurate but you can shoot a double action revolver in either mode. In close range like when that thing was trying to make a meal out of me I don't want to have to remember to cock it.

The .45 has the put down power, but I do enjoy my Brazilian-made Taurus PT-99. Taurus has an innovative decocker/safety that is frame mounted as opposed to slide mounted, so a definite improvement over the Beretta. One thing I have that you don't is a 30 round clip (thank God gun shows are still legal in Ohio !!) It's the same principle with going from 7.62 (.308) to 5.56 (.223) You pack less punch but more firepower. Besides, the cases on the .45's are so thin you can't hop up the loads any. As far as punch though, I did have a Remington 700 in .338 Win Mag !!! Problem is, there is NOTHING you could use it on in this part of the country. In Ohio you can't even take deer with any rifle except blackpowder because the state is too populated and you might hit someone's residence. You have to use a shotgun or primitive weapons.

BTW Jabal? is also used when referring to razorbacks, depending upon the local dialect. I took out a 250 lb razorback in legitimate self defense. If I didn't kill it, I would either be dead or have ended up looking like I tried to take a pisola tour on Carretera Duarte and got in TW's way! (There! Now it has something to do with the D.R!!!)

Re: Zolcuatas & Jabal?

Down here in the wilds of south Florida we have more than are share of Pit vipers. Nothing like fly-fishing a canal for tarpon and spooking a nest of water mocasins. Not to mention the nasty coral snake.

In the past I have taken many a feral pig or wild Boar with my Blackhawks. I still have chills when I think about the time it took 5 rounds of .44 mag to drop a Boar that was charging me. he ended up only 6 feet from where I stood.

the Taurus is a much maligned brand that has improved it's quality over the years. I was lucky enough to get a tour of their US facility in Miami and was quite impressed. For quality and price not many can compare.(More bang for the buck so to speak)
I own a wide frame .45 that has 14 round mags but is just too heavy for carry. My Govt model is equiped with a ten round extended mag. If I need more than 10 rounds I am dead anyway.

It is a shame that you can't privately own a .45 in the DR. It is a old law that was implemented supposedly to prevent the general public to use the same ammunition as the military. Silly huh?

D.R. munitions laws

They have a weird law in the D.R. where you can bring a gun into the country but not ammunition. It's not like they have a nascent ammunition industry to protect.

My dad was born and grew up there in Miami so I have a lot of family down there. Because they had to deal with so many rattlesnakes, he hates all snakes and will kill them instinctively. I have had to try to stop him up here in Ohio a bunch of time because he doesn't distinguish between the nonpoisonous and the poisonous. Once I was down and there was a gun show out by Coconut Grove and I had a chance to attend. It was interesting to see the differences in the character and tone of the shows and the demographics of the attendees.

That 357 I used to take the boar down was a Taurus 8 shot. They are always innovating. I would get that .454 casull but the Taurus one is just sooo ugly and hokey looking.
