Browsing the web for outsourcing solutions, I find an info on labor costs on the website of a software company in DR

Tarifa por Hora
Project Manager/Architect U$20.00
Analyst/Senior Developer U$15.00
Junior Developer U$10.00

The company apparently has reputable clients.

What do you think, if you have an idea of the salaries in IT industry in the DR?

Thank you for your input ,

Barnab?

I have been using vworker.com (when they were rentacoder.com) and have been satisfied with the outcome of 2 projects I submitted.

You post a project and people (coders) bid on the project. You can select pay-full or pay-as-you-go (multistep) plan. You pay only for deliverables, but you have to deposit the money in the escrow.

The coders bid and underbid and you select one that best suits your needs. One of the projects was a simple web-based switching control panel for various AV HW based on RS232 standard, but it included some neat features such as autorun, cron jobs, autoreverts, autoselects, etc.

The coders started bidding at $200 and the lowest bid was $10. I got a bid from an Indian guy in USA for $20 but what differentiated him was the fact that he submitted the complete working model along with his bid. I liked it very much, and we did some tune up, and he got $10 tip on top of his bid.

Yes I know RAC (vworker), I have had maybe 20-25 jobs realized there.

It is true that you may pickup a good coder for very little money. You can also have bad surprises, with work useless or well under expectations.

I might outsource the coding of a web application for my business in France, and i don't feel like giving the work on RAC, because this is not a 50 or 500$ job. Also there are security issues involved.

But I agree 100% that RAC is worth trying for smaller jobs. I sometimes give the work to 2 different workers, you still have a reasonable cost and a better chance to be fully satisfied. Last time I posted a job I paid 25$ to a french student who made an great job for data grabbing.

Thank you then for the valuable post.

I have used Odesk for 9 different projects ranging from Web Design, Software Development and some other coding jobs. Odesk Contractors are reliable and bid waay less for your projects. I've also tried eLance and they bid triple, quadruple the price.

For any coding work, you must know EXACTLY what you want and before hiring your MUST have an extensive chat with them through either Skype or Gmail chat. Make sure you know exactly what you want and also the time frame. Also with Odesk you can test the waters so lets say you have a project you only want to pay $4,000 for.

You let people bid and check their history, portfolios, reviews, etc. If you choose a qualified candidate who bids your project for $3,800 and he only wants 10% down, all you do is pay $380 for him to start and when he completes the project you pay him the remaining $3420. You don't have to put in escrow the entire amount.

You must use your instincts and common sense on these sites. However if you are an annoying micro manager type who needs updates everyday all the time, you will surely lose your head because you will not get this. What matters is that they say what they do and thank God that so far in my experience they have.

Thanks Robert and cibaoo for the info about odesk.

As i replied to Rubio_higuey, I have used Rentacoder already.

My question was more focused on DR: Does a senior software engineer/architect in the DR make 20$ an hour?

Jackichan, I'll have a look at the link, thank you

@Barnabe - what Robert was suggesting was odesk.com - I checked them out and they look like vworker alternative.

About your question regarding US$20/hour to SW engineer in the DR: it's the company that charges you US$20. let's say they pay the engineer US$15. So that 570 pesos per hour x 8 hours x 22 workdays = 100k pesos per month. I do not think that is unrealistic for top software engineers to earn that in the DR and especially in Santo Domingo.

I meant in fact that, for a talented senior software engineer, to be charged 20 US/hour sounds fair.

In SD Senior S/W developers (J2EE/.NET) will get GROSS salaries in the range of 60 - 120k depending on experience and negotiating power.
